Tibetan Refugee Assistance Program

Welcome to the webpage for the Tibetan Refugee Assistance Program, under the auspices of the Sakya lineage of Vajrayana Buddhism. The site currently includes information on fundraising for TRA as well as the construction of a new library for Sakya College in Dehra Dun, India. Manjushri and Chenrezig thangkas will be sold via this website as well to help raise funds for the library project. Pictures of the available thangkas are now posted.

Please bookmark this page and return again for more updates! We will soon have information on several nuns in need of sponsorship.

THE IMPORTANCE OF THE TIBETAN REFUGEE ASSISTANCE PROGRAM:

One of the most serious problems facing Tibetan refugees in India and Nepal is that of educating the next generation. Literacy, basic knowledge of hygine and nutrition, and vocational skills are crucial for the survival and prosperity of the Tibetan community in India and Nepal.

Most of the 140,000 Tibetan refugees live in India and Nepal. In contrast to their economic situation in Tibet, these families are forced to farm small plots of land with little or no equipment, grow crops with which they are unfamiliar, and contend with a hot and arid climate. They also encounter diseases for which they have no natural immunity.

As a result, most Tibetan refugee families live near the poverty line. When misfortunes such as illness or poor crop yields occur in a family, children are frequently forced to leave school due to the need for supplemental income. Furthermore, the lack of resources prevents all but a few children from pursuing higher education.

To ensure the education of the next generation and to imporve the living standards of Tibetan families, we established a sponsorship program for the Tibetan refugees in India and Nepal. Sponsorship of a Tibetan family or individual children within a family leads to a better economic and cultural standard of living for the entire family and for the Tibetan community as a whole. With financial assistance, Tibetan children are able to remain in school without interruption. Talented children are also able to pursue higher education as an important step towards leadership positions within the community.
