Philip C. Bolger (December 3, 1927 May 24, 2009), prolific boat designer, was born and lived in Gloucester, Massachusetts. He began work full time as a draftsman for boat designers Lindsay Lord and then John Hacker in the early 1950s. Bolger also cites being influenced by mentors L.F. Herreshoff, Nicholas Montgomery, Howard Chapelle and his own brother Bill Bolger.

The Gloucester Light Dory, one of Bolgers better-known designs
Bolgers first boat design was a 32-foot (9.75 m) sportfisherman published in the January 1952 issue of Yachting magazine. He subsequently designed more than 668 different boats, making him one of the most prolific boat designers of the 20th century, from the solidly conventional to extremely innovative, from a 114-foot-10-inch (35 m) replica of an eighteenth-century naval warship, the frigate Surprise (ex-Rose), to the 6-foot-5-inch (1.96 m) plywood box-like dinghy Tortoise. Although his designs ranged through the full spectrum of boat types, Bolger tended to favor simplicity over complexity. Many of his hulls are made from sheet materials typically plywood and have hard chines. A subclass of these designed in association with Harold Payson called Instant Boats were so named because they were intended to be easily built by amateurs out of commonly available materials. Bolger was also considered to be a modern expert in the design of the sharpie type and advocated the use of traditional sailing rigs and leeboards. From the 1990s, Phil Bolger teamed with his wife Susanne Altenburger, designing boats under the name Phil Bolger & Friends Inc. During this time, they emphasized the design of sustainable and fuel-efficient boats for the fishing industry. Also, they participated in a large military commission with the Naval Sea Systems Command on new designs for military landing craft utility boats. Bolger was a prolific writer and wrote many books, the last being Boats with an Open Mind, as well as hundreds of magazine articles on small craft designs, chiefly in Woodenboat, Small Boat Journal and Messing About in Boats. Bolger died on May 24, 2009, of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. His wife explained that is mind had slipped in the last several months, and he wanted to control the end of his life while he was still able.

New sail boat designs take high tech and blend it with nature at an almost cellular level. And why not, it's all "one" anyway; is that not what sailing is after all? That's why we sail to be one with nature, using its strength and beauty to propel us. Sailing even in ancient times has always been an art and a science, and perhaps that is what so intrigues us, as we harvest the forces of the wind and wave.

Now, with all this known, as any true sailor can attest, we must work to constantly improve upon the equipment and design; making stronger, lighter materials that glide effortlessly through the water, not demanding of the wind, but using all of it to propel the craft forward, faster, and under greater control, as if we are ever truly in control of the wind.

One new concept dreamed up by a Water Craft Think Tank believes it is now possible using new materials to allow a sail boat hull to be made with dual wall construction where the outer wall re-shapes itself based on special haptic pressure sensors in real time based on the flow of the water around the hull, thus as the boat speeds up the hull design is set for the optimum shape for that exact speed.

And when the boat is going slow, the hull again reshapes itself to the most efficient form for that speed. As the boat crosses swells or currents, one side of the boat maybe a different shape than the other side as needed. This is the concept we envision, so please consider it.

Sail boats have been around since ancient times. These boats have proven to be a faster and economical way to get around as compared to row boats. The ancient Romans developed a way to have the two techniques combined to form a formidable navy of thousands of galleys. These galleys were rigged with multiple sails that could propel the boat in the wind. The rows were manned by slaves or condemned men and were used when the wind was against the sails and in the opposite direction the boat needed to sail. When man fitted his ship with a sail he probably made the most cost efficient way to travel - Sail and boat.

The wind provides the power that sails the boat. A sail that is well designed can be a good wind trap that propels the boat forward. The sail of the boat must be very strong, usually made from canvas that is very thick and fastened to the mast of the ship with the strongest ropes made from jute and cotton.

The fastest sail boats were the clipper ships. These were ships that relied only on wind power and were designed to use the winds optimum efficiency. The ship itself was designed according to aerodynamics and to offer the least water resistance while sailing. They were very sleek boats with uniquely designed sails.

A boat may have many kinds of sails to propel the boat. The sails are set according to the speed of the wind and the speed the boat needs to travel. There are the foresails, headsails, Genoa, headsail and a Jib. Al the sails of a boat are arranged in a particular order known as a 'sail plan'. This plan is arranged according to two opposed forces that apply to the ship. The opposition of the water to the movement of the ship and the force of the wind that forces the ship forward. This simple act of tying a sheet to a mast to make a boat move has developed through the ages in to a science of sorts.

The sail of the boat is set according to the purpose of the boat. A race boar will have a particularly designed sail to serve the small boat with good speed and a cruiser will have appropriate sails that will allow the cruiser to sail lazily on the water. The type of sail boat will also depend on the time you intend to sail and where you intend to go. If you want to get out to the deep blue sea you will need sails that will be able to withstand the forces of the sea gales. The type of sail boat you want to use will also be decided by the budget you are willing to put aside for the purchase of the sail boat.

In modern times sail material has changed radically. Ancient sail boats used hand woven sails that were very durable and could easily stand the onslaught of the salty waves and the wind. However, modern sails are made of very durable and lightweight polyester material that is synthetic and can withstand dampness better than the sails made from natural fiber.

With the coming of the internet and the advance in science and technology every thing has become more computer oriented than ever before.

Initially for boat designing there used to be hand books and manuals that guided you through the different aspects of boat design.

These books and manuals are still available but 3D boat design software is quickly becoming more popular. The main reason for this is that it saves countless hours figuring out complicated calculations and drawing individual lines.

3D boat design software puts everything is in front of you. This type of software gives you easy step by step instructions and practically shows you how to make the boat. You can even make unlimited changes and see what impact this has on the final design and suitability of the boat.

Computer Aided Design (or CAD for short) allows you to easily create 3D objects on your computer screen. As you can see what the actual design will look like as a finished product, you can play around with it to see what impact the changes have on the final design. This gives you complete control whether you change the bulkhead, hull shape or keel.

Most 3D boat design software available on the internet today will give you a wide range of pre made designs to choose from. These are helpful as it lets new users view actual designs that have been created and either adapt or change portions of these to suit your exact needs.

On the other hand there are only a select few software companies that actually have dedicated boat designers available to members to help build their custom made boat. These custom designers provide you with the complete design solution to your boating needs and ensure you always get the boat design of your dreams.

Finally you must remember that decent boat design software helps you to build the boat of your dreams.

Probably the best idea is to get some sort of 3D boat design software that is affordable, easy and flexible to use and is suitable for anyone from the hobbyist model boat builder to professional mass ship producers.
