~Responses to Debate~
I was recently asked by a new friend if I believe in God…this was my answer:
I believe that God/Goddess is an entity that is beyond our comprehension, imagination, and/or wildest dreams. I believe it is an energy, a life-force larger than all the galaxies and universe. I also believe that our atman (soul) is a living, breathing, form of the Goddess/God. To me God/Goddess is a whole with many attributes. I worship whoever it is necessary to worship at specific times that I am in need of assistance or direction from a higher being.
The ultimate creator seems appropriate and correct to be a woman. Women are the creators, although we cannot create without man. Therefore leading me to believe that "God" is not one being. He is many rolled into one. It's so hard to explain. I hope I'm not totally confusing you. I know how I feel, and my self gives me a sense that I am correct in my beliefs. I'm comfortable with this and that's all that really matters. I have to explain myself to friends and family and co-workers on a daily basis. I'm ridiculed constantly. My very best friend is Catholic, and my baby's dad and family are Catholic. Well, believe me, they have much to say. They all think I'm going to hell. What the hell (pardon the pun) do they know...I say!!! No body knows what is out there awaiting our fates. The half of the world population worships and abides by a book that constantly contradicts itself, is full of half truths, and honestly...who were the dumbass men that wrote it, and were they all smoking crack at the time, cause they can't seem to get there stories straight. One guy says one thing, another guy says another, and so on and so on.
Sorry, I kinda got off subject there...
Anyways, I follow Hinduism (the world's oldest religion):
The Vedas (Hindu Scriptures) tell us this about God - "OM Poornamadah Poornamidam Poornaad Poornamudachyate; Poornasya Poornamaadaaya Poornamevaavashisyate". Translated in English, this verse means "What is Whole - This is Whole - What has come out of the Whole is also Whole; When the Whole is taken out of the Whole, the Whole still remains Whole".
The essence of this verse is that the Infinite cannot be measured arithmetically - God is Infinite. The Infinite can be represented in Infinite ways and does manifest in infinite ways. This, in short, is the essence of the Hindu belief in God. That He is everywhere, around us and within us. Infact, Hinduism takes the bold step of proclaiming that "we are God". Like I said earlier, our souls are a living, breathing manifestation of God. The Christian God proclaimed he made man in his image, right?
At the end of the day, Hinduism is monotheistic (Believes in One God). However, Hinduism believes not only in One God, but also in His Infinite manifestations around us and within us perpetually. Realizing that it is impossible for mankind to visualize the Infinite, Hinduism presents us with His forms to help us visualize him. This belief of Hinduism is often confused with polytheism.
To illustrate this point - We all observe the unending processes of birth, existence and death, which seem to be continually taking place around us. We constantly witness these processes and are yet ignorant of them, living as we do in the comfort of our illusory lives. Hinduism gives form and shape to these "works" of the Infinite with the Hindu Trinity - Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva. "Brahma" creates, "Vishnu" sustains, and "Shiva" destroys or consumates everything in the Universe.
That the Supreme can be worshipped in any form is a concept unique to Hinduism. Such worship is truly a tribute to His greatness.
I hope this has helped you somewhat to understand my beliefs. It's so hard to explain, but such a beautiful feeling once you've let yourself be a part of it. I worship the Earth, Goddess Gaia. She is such a huge entity that literally lives and breathes, births and dies. It's amazing how spiritually limited people are. Chrisitians, Catholics, etc. they don't see the earth or the universe as something that gives birth and something that can take life. Mother nature has shown us that she "can bring us into this world and she can take us out". Hope it's been entertaining dear. Sorry to chat YOUR ear off this time. I could go on for days about this subject.
Blessings to you and Dorian,
~Brandy~
