Why I Practice Sahaja Yoga Meditation


I first got my self realisation in October 1984 in Bath in England. I could not feel the cool breeze to begin with but I kept experiencing a very profound inner peace that I had never felt before. I started to notice subtle changes within myself - my senses of smell and taste changed. An example was during the winter months when the trees had no leaves and there was frost and snow on the ground I kept smelling the perfume of flowers everywhere I went. I suddenly started noticing my sensitivity to different colours was somehow different – I started to appreciate brighter colours. My health started to improve and almost daily I started to feel stronger within myself.

I was seeking answers to lots of questions and when I listened to Shri Mataji’s talks I immediately felt Shri Mataji had such straightforward and common-sense answers to everything I had always wondered about. I was even fortunate enough to meet Shri Mataji in person in London at a public program in November 1984 and I was very surprised at how approachable She was. I even found the confidence to walk up to the stage and ask Her a question at the end of the programme and She gave me a beautiful smile as She answered me.

When I first got my self-realisation I had just returned from three years overseas and I was at first struck by how differently the Sahaja Yogis were to any other people I had met in my travels. The yogis had an inner glow and dignity that I had not seen before and they seem to have found something on a subtle level that other seekers I had met hadn’t got (which I couldn’t quite put my finger on). As a single lady I was also completely struck by how differently the men in Sahaja Yoga treated me – they behaved very differently to how other men outside Sahaja Yoga behaved towards me. I was actually quite a shy person but I felt immediately felt very comfortable talking to the yogis.

The yogis in England at that time had much more first hand experience of being with Shri Mataji as She was living in London at the time. The yogis in Bath were full of little anecdotes and stories about times they had spent with Shri Mataji and some of the miracles they had witnessed first hand themselves.

After a month or so of practicing Sahaja Yoga meditation I noticed lots of changes within myself. I started to notice I was better able to handle situations with more confidence, I could study for longer and studying became so much easier as things started to click into place more quickly for me.

Since then I have been fortunate enough to travel widely and visit lots of friends I have met through Sahaja Yoga all over the world. The inner calm and the feeling of love that you get from being with yogis is so profound and yet so difficult to describe – it needs to be experienced first-hand. The world is such a better place with Sahaja Yoga.
