TRAVERS of Kildare Capes, Prince Edward Island and St. John's Newfoundland

Nancy Compton

Through the assistance of Marilyn Bell and Charlotte Stewart of the Prince Edward Island Archives and Elsie Travers of Prince Edward Island I have been able to gather some additional information on my elusive Travers line.

At the very beginning all I knew was that Eliza Travers married my ggg-grandfather, Charles Edward Ruggles. I had no idea when or where or anything more about her than her name.

This is what I've been able to link to my lines and at the end will be an abstract of the Past and Present of PEI by DA Mackinnon & AB Washburton circa 1906.

The Travers sisters, Louisa (second daughter of Mary Travers of St. John's Newfoundland) and Eliza (third daughter of Mary) married brothers; Thomas Gilbert Ruggles and Charles Edward Ruggles respectively.

Notes for Thaddeus W. Travers:
The subject of this sketch received a good district school education and was reared to the vocation of farming, which pursuit he has continuously followed throughout his active years. He is possessed of a good theoretical and practical knowledge of everu detail of his avocation and has pursued it with a gratifying degree of success.

The farm which comprises two hundred acres of land, of which eighty acreas are under the plow is considered one the most attractive and productive properties in the community. Part of this land was cleared by the subject himself who has made all of the improvements, which are neat and permanent character and which reflect credit upon the owner. The farm was formerly known as the Thomas G. Ruggles place, having been owned by a man who in an early day came from Nova Scotia and here lived with the subject who bought the place some time prior to the death of Mr. Ruggles. Mr. Travers engages in mixed farming, also in live stock raising, giving some attention to dairying.

In politics he supports the Liberal party and has held the office of justice of the peace for ten years. He is a member of the Church of England, and his fraternal relationship is with the Sons of Temperance.

John C. Travers of St. John's Newfoundland and his first wife Hanna G. St. John came to PEI about 1834 and settled in Kildare Capes. John C. Travers, a printer by occupation, a Liberal in his politics, a member of the Church of England and during his later years would move to Charlottetown and die there about 1880 at the age of 72 years. His second wife was a Miss Tamlin also of Charlottetown and they would have ten children together - the names of those ten are yet unknown.

John C. Travers and wife Hanna had eight children:

Louisa Travers (not my Louisa but probably her neice)

Widdecombe Travers - deceased

John. C. Travers, Jr. - would become a farmer

James S. Travers - deceased

Victor Travers - moved back to Newfoundland

Thaddeus Travers #1 - deceased

Thomas R. Travers - moved to Massachusetts

* Thaddeus Travers b. October 26, 1844 (the object of this article).

Thaddeus was reared in the profession of farming and would purchase the farm of Thomas Gilbert Ruggles with whom he lived with prior to the death of Thomas Gilbert Ruggles (husband of Louisa Travers - I believe that Thaddeus was the nephew of Louisa). The farm was two hundred acres with eighty acres "under the plow", and the remainder as pasture land for his livestock.

Thaddeus was also a member of the Liberal party as was his father and held the office of justice of the peace and was a member of the fraternal organization Sons of Temperance.

Thaddeus married Isabelle Dougherty of Cascumpee, PEI in 1877. They would have seven children:

Maria Travers who resided in Worcester, MA and was a nurse.

Isabelle Travers who lived in Vancouver, BC and worked as a dressmaker.

Reginald Travers who moved to Central America.

Ethel Travers

Gilbert Travers - who died at age 13 from drowning.

Victor Travers

George Travers
