Engine Break In

Engine Break In
I get asked often, "how should I break it in" Well here it is. When ever you purchase that new ATV or Motorcycle or have your engine rebuilt it should be properly broken in for best performance and durability. First check all fluids, fasteners etc. Start engine and listen for anything unusual. If you think something is not right shut it down and re-check your work.

Do not let the engine idle for extended time, it is best to run the engine at many different rpm ranges, keeping high rpm runs minimum. Run engine until it reaches operating temp. Then shut it down, let it cool and re-check fluids, check for leaks etc. Re-start the engine and go on an easy ride for about 20 minutes going through all gears and run up to at least 4,000 rpm, again do not run at constant or only low rpm. Again shut down engine, let cool, then do another 20 run. After that check over once more and you're race ready!

I stress the importance of not running at a steady rpm, this can cause the rings to not seat properly and cause heavy blow by, oil consumption and loss of power.

Change oil after first 600 miles, or after first race practice. Then change oil at recommended use.
