Rotary Club of MADRAS COSMOS, RI District 3230
The Rotary Club of Madras Cosmos was chartered on October 21, 1992 as the twenty-sixth club of the District 3230 with 42 members.
The club takes active interest in recognising persons of eminence for professional excellence, and for their contributions to the society. Many leading members have honoured the club by accepting awards instituted by the club and have actively taken part in the club's activities.
At Cosmos, we believe that social service projects undertaken should yield long term benefits to the beneficiaries.
Some of the ongoing projects undertaken by the club include :
1. Adoption of a village school at Veeraraghavapuram
Veeraraghavapuram is a small village outside Chennai (Madras) city in South India. The village school here is run by the Panchayat or locally elected village administration body. Here Cosmos has constructed a building for the school in 1994. Cosmos has also taken the responsibility of donating books and other study material every year to assist these students. Cosmos has also provided electricity connection for the classrooms in this school. We intend to start a vocational training centre, named after Paul Harris, to provide self-employment opportunities to the students of this school.
2. Adoption of a corporation school at Chennai
A Corporation (local administration) school has been adopted by Cosmos, which caters to students of the lower income category. Here Cosmos is engaged in assisting students to undergo training in Tailoring, Food Processing and Nursing. Training equipment has been donated by Cosmos to this school.
3. Child Care Centre at Periakaranai
Cosmos recognises that good care and nutritious food is a must for every child. At Periakaranai, to cater to the children of the poor villagers, a Creche has been built by Cosmos, where over 50 children from the age of six months to five years are looked after, while their parents, mostly daily wage labourers, are busy with their day's work in the nearby factories. At this Creche, Cosmos has also provided for the unemployed mothers to learn tailoring, candle making, etc.
4. Adoption of a Special School for the Mentally Retarded
A special school for the Mentally Retarded, named GNANADEEPAM (meaning the lamp of wisdom) has been adopted by Cosmos. There are 35 students in the age group of 5 to 18 years. These children are being trained in sewing, book binding, screen printing, making greeting cards, etc. Cosmos has donated a hand operated loom to this school. The children weave bed spreads, face towels, door mats, carpets, etc., using this loom. The fabrics made by these children are sold, and the proceeds are fully used for their welfare activities.
These are long term projects where our members regularly visit these centres and assist the respective authorities at these centres through voluntary donation of material, money and time to reduce the hardships faced by the inmates of these centres.
