The phenomenon of osmosis occurs when pure water flows from a dilute saline solution through a semi permeable membrane into a higher concentrated saline solution. The effective driving force is called osmotic pressure. If a source of external pressure, greater than the osmotic pressure is applied, the water flows out of the more concentrated solution into the dilute solution and hence the term ‘Reverse Osmosis’.
