2005 NFL DRAFT PREVIEW:
* There seems no reason for me to place players on teams as if this was a draft. There is no way at this point to predict where all 32 NFL teams will finish. Rather, what I have chosen to do is just write down my top 30 prospects for next years draft. Never to early to get started.
*1) Mike Williams WR- USC: If he is not allowed to enter the NFL Supplemental Draft expect Williams to be allowed to return to USC, where he will be welcomed back with open arms. He would have been a Top 10 selection this season, there is NO doubt if he stays healthy that not only will US dominate, but he will be a Top 3 pick next season.
*2) Mario Williams DE- NC State: Outstanding pass-rusher will absolutely wreak havoc this season in the ACC. Most pundits have Dan Cody or David Pollack as their top end, but Kenechi Udeze came out of no where this year and Williams will break on the season with even a bigger impact than did Edeze. Williams is a absolute burner in the Jevon Kearse and Julius Peppers mold and although his upside is just about as high, he needs to work on his run stuffing. Watch Mario climb this season!
3) Cadillac Williams RB- Auburn: Auburn will ride the "cadillac" this season and Williams will be ready for the challenge. Williams has explosive speed and the muscle to boot. Had he come out this season he would have been the first runningback taken THIS year's draft. Barring any severe injury Cadillac will be some teams Franchise RB by next season.
4) Derrick Johnson LB- Texas: There was no Linebacker in this year's draft that has the tremedous skills that Johnson has. This upcoming season in College Football it will be Derrick Johnson on one level and then every other "good" LB on the next. Johnson is head and shoulders above all the rest in College Football.
5) Artrel Rolle CB- Miami: The Hurricanes are loaded every season and this upcoming year will be no different. Rolle would have been in the mix with DeAngelo Hall and Dunta Robinson for the top corners in this draft. Rolle has great cover skills and is a sure-fire top 10 selection next season. Teams will always look for shut-down corners and next season some team will be ecstatic to find Rolle sitting there waiting for them.
6) Cedric Benson RB- Texas: This will be a very strong year for Runningbacks and Benson is right at the top of the line with Cadillac Williams. Benson needs to improve on his running between the tackles, but I am nit-picking here. I look at Benson's upcoming season to parallel that of RB Kevin Jones season last year. He will improve on his pass-catching and pass-blocking and will become a complete back his this season.
7) Alex Barron OT- Florida State: The concensus top O-lineman in this upcoming season and on many people's board the #1 player in the country. I knock Barron down a few pegs to get a better read on him early in the upcoming season.
8) Matt Leinart QB- USC: Leinart put up better numbers than former Heisman Trophy winner Carson Palmer did last season and became a Heisman Trophy canidate himself. Leinart's delivery is a bit "un-finished" for my personal liking, but I think he'll be working on that this upcoming season.
9) Corey Webster CB- LSU: I love shut-down CBs so it is no surprise that I have two of them in my top 10 rankings. Webster is a bit more physical than Rolle, but doesn't have the blazing speed that he has. LSU's defense will once again be one of the nation's best with Webster anchoring the secondary.
10) Brad Smith QB- Missouri: Smith has all the tools to dominate the college game this upcoming season, but does his skills necessarily translate to the NFL??? These are the questions that will have to be answered during the upcoming season. I will always give skill the benefit of the doubt so for the mean time I slot Smith here. His size is his biggest question mark.
11) Ronnie Brown RB- Auburn: And the hits just keep on coming at Runningback. The "second" back from Auburn will be a powerhouse this season in the SEC. Brown is a "power" back, not really in the mode of a slasher so I'm weary that some teams will question his speed, but his production will oout-weigh the nay-sayers and Brown will be the 3rd Runningback to go in the Top 10.
12) Eric Winston OT- Miami: Miami always produces NFL Talent and this year is NO different. Winston is a bit raw, but word has it that his mobility and quickness are off the charts. If he can have a dominant upcoming season, than he will begin to fly up people's charts...I'm just trying to beat them to the punch.
13) Mike Patterson DT- USC: USC will dominate the Pac 10 this season and their pair of DTs will be the one's dealing out the punishment. Patterson is a little more agile than Cody and gets the higher grade at this point as most NFL schemes utilize quickness to slid into gaps. Patterson and Cody combined this season will be unblockable.
14) Aaron Rodgers QB- California:
