ARLINGTON, Texas -- Boston found another reason to blame Carl Everett on Friday.
The former Red Sox outfielder hit a two-out single in the fifth inning to break up a no-hit bid by right-hander Derek Lowe in Boston's 13-0 victory in front of 32,366 fans at The Ballpark in Arlington.
The Rangers had gone 213 games since being shut out at The Ballpark.
Lowe (15-5) allowed only two hits and racked up four strikeouts in seven scoreless innings for the victory. He is now tied with Oakland lefty Barry Zito for the American League in wins, and leads the Major Leagues with a 2.13 ERA. Earlier in the day, he was suspended for five games by Major League Baseball for his actions last Sunday, when he hit Baltimore's Gary Matthews Jr., which touched off a bench-clearing brawl.
Everett was traded to Texas during the offseason after clashing with both Boston managers (Jimy Williams and Grady Little) during the 2001 season. On Thursday, Everett hit two home runs, including a grand slam, in the Rangers' 19-7 rout against his former teammates.
The Red Sox (64-44) jumped out to a quick lead with a two-run home run by right fielder Trot Nixon, his first of two in the game, in the first inning off Rangers starter Ismael Valdes. First baseman Brian Daubach pushed Boston ahead, 4-0, with a two-run home run in the second.
Lowe retired the first 11 batters he faced before plunking Alex Rodriguez in the back with two outs in the fourth. Four batters later, Everett smashed a 2-2 pitch up the middle for the Rangers' first hit. Texas right fielder Kevin Mench picked up the team's second hit of the game in the sixth with single up the middle.
Lowe walked Ivan Rodriguez during a scoreless seventh and was replaced by Alan Embree to start the eighth.
Valdes (5-8) recovered from the slow start to throw four scoreless innings before Boston center fielder Johnny Damon hit a home run, his ninth of the season, to push the Red Sox ahead, 5-0, in the seventh. The homer was Damon's second in two days.
Newly acquired left-handed reliever Dennys Reyes replaced Valdes to start the eighth inning and the starter was charged with five earned runs and a balk on six hits in the loss. The Rangers' righty struck out four and walked two batters
