Jesse VANNOY lost in Tenn< 1797

Update 17 Feb 2000

Records indicate that Jesse VanNoy of Madisonville, Hopkins Co., Ky. was born ca 1797 in Tenn. He married Gemina ------- and three children were born:
Granville 1823
Dicy 1824
Alexander 1826

They then moved to Madisonvill, Ky. and are found on the 1830, 1840, 1850 census. Five more children were born and Gemina died. Jesse then married Hannah Curtis and they had a son, Henry. Jesse died 1859 and is listed on the 1860 mortality schedule of Hopkins Co., Tn. Several descendents of the family still live in Hopkins County but no one knows where Jesse came from.

Was the first son named Granville after Lord Granville who was granted many, many acres of land in N.C. before it became a state? Did Jesse's father take up land and then had to give it up as new people moved in with deeds to that land? In the cemetery at Madisonville, Ky., next to Jemina is a Dicy and John Medford. Was John Medford a brother to Jemina? Did Jemina and Jesse name their first daughter Dicy after John's wife? What a puzzle.

A grand daughter's marriage Bond at the Court House says her father (Grandville) was born in Hawkins County, Tn. Have found no trace of the family in Tn. Need help with this problem.

Hopkins Co., Ky Historical Society has great records and they have been most helpful.

Anybody out there searching Vannoys, Vanoys, Vanoie, Venoy, etc.?
