Some may be tempted to think that we have a natural ability to understand God's word, but such is not the case. 1 Corinthians 2:14 says "The natural man receiveth not the things of the spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them."
At times God hides things from the so called wise, "and hast revealed them unto babes," Matthew 11:25. Whom do we need to teach us? John 14:26 tells us it is the Holy Spirit. When we study the Bible, we should pray that the Holy Spirit will direct our thoughts and help us to understand His word.
It is not always safe to follow what seems right to us. "There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death," Proverbs 14:12. The last days described as perilous times, in 2 Timothy 3:1. Evil men and seducers will abound, deceiving, and being deceived, 2 Timothy 3:13. False prophets shall arise and show great signs and wonders, according to Matthew 24:24. Their miracles are calculated to deceive even the very elect, also mentioned in verse twenty-four.
1 Thessalonians 5:21 says that to prevent deception, with all our ideas, we are we to "prove all things; hold fast that which is good." Isaiah 8:20 tells us that we are to test all things according "To the law and to the testimony." The writings we must believe, in order to accept the words of Jesus, are those of Moses, as told to us in John 5:46 and forty-seven which state clearly, "If thou hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, though one rose from the dead."
The apostles, in 2 Timothy 3:15, regarded the Old Testament as "the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is Christ Jesus." 2 Timothy 3:16 and seventeen says, "All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: that the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works."
Lack of knowledge is destroying people today, as foretold in Hosea 4:6.
What is God's word to us? Psalm 119:105 tells us it is "a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path." Our duty regarding the light God gives, is to "Walk while the light is with you," according to John 12:35. To know if a doctrine is of God, we must do his will, says John 7:17. God wants to show us great and mighty things, found in Jeremiah 33:3. Proverbs 2:3 through five says "Yea, if thou criest after knowledge, and liftest up thy voice for understanding; if thou seekest her as silver, and searchest for her as hid treasures; then shall thou understand the fear of the Lord, and find the knowledge of God."
