Information for Redwood Camera Club Members

Redwood Camera Club

Welcome New or Prospective Member;

Welcome to the Redwood Camera Club. We pride ourselves on being a small comfortable group with great diversity in its membership; from professional photographers to blue ribbon amateurs and beginners. We hope to provide an environment of inspiration, support, passion, talent, expertise, and skills.

The Club meets on the 2nd and 4th Saturdays of each month (subject to change) at the Boy Scout Council office, 1007 Wood Street, Eureka, CA. We emphasize education for our members through videos, slides, and guest speakers. Field trips and special themes are scheduled periodically throughout the year. Ideas for various activities are generated from the Club members. Each meeting allows time for informal sharing of photos around the table as well as an opportunity for more formal sharing of photos. Each member may provide 2 photos to share either digitally or a hard copy. These photos presented anonymously will be commented on with regard to impact, composition and technical merit. Additional photos may be shared if time permits. Judging is left to outside organizations, such as the Redwood Art Association, Humboldt Arts Council or other local and farther-a-field competitions. The four main goals of the Redwood Camera Club are to;
 Provide members with photography related education
 Provide a forum for exhibiting photographs
 Perform a community service
 Provide a forum for informal sharing of photographs

HOW WE HANG A REDWOOD CAMERA CLUB SHOW

It is important to note that when the RCC has an exhibit it is designed to display the total exhibit at it’s best and the group of photographs in the most effective manner possible rather than highlighting an individual photographer.

1. We highly encourage members to bring their work to meetings and subsequently exhibit in official RCC exhibits. . Exhibitors need to meet The Guidelines for Hanging a Show (included in this packet). Additional limitations may be in place for some exhibits; such as specific themes, or topics, size, previously juried pieces only, or camera club juried.

2. Deadlines for participation in a group show is set so we know how many people will be in showing; this allows us to determine in advance how many photos each photographer will be able to hang. Date and time to take down the show are also predetermined.

3. Labels are to be printed in a uniform format. Label content is 1) title of photo in 18 point bold Verdana font center justified, 2) name of photographer in 16 point regular Verdana font also center justified 3) either NFS or the price should be 16 point Verdana and should be right aligned. Similar fonts if you do not have Verdana are Ariel, Estrangelo Edessa, Microsoft Sans Serif and Shruti. Occasionally other information will be included such as an artist statement or comments on the theme, etc..
(Avery #5876 Ivory Clean Edge Business Cards 2” by 3 ½ ”)

4. Framing: see attached instructions.

5. Hanging the show: We meet together at the venue at a pre-arranged time and date. Members help hang the show, but on occasion, a limited number of members may be selected to hang. We place all the photos out in the gallery prior to hanging and then regroup them in a manner that is appropriate to the venue; your photos may not be grouped together side by side.

6. Equipment: measuring tapes, levels, wall hanging putty, hammer, picture hanging nails are helpful.

7. If you can’t be available to help hang the show or take down your photos, then other club members are glad to help. Please contact another member who is showing for their assistance. Please offer help if others need it.

Display Requirements

Photographs should be under glass, plastic, acetate, spray or another protective element. A release should be signed if no protection is used.

For hanging use braided wire, aluminum, non-stretch cord or non-stretch plastic or coated wire. The word wire can be used for any of the above.

Place fasteners for the wire about ¼ to 1/3 down from the top of the frame/mat.
The apex of the wire when pulled should be 2 inches below the top of the frame/mat. Do not use hangers with teeth or U-clips.

Twist wire at least 4 times after running through the hanger.

Non-skid material on the corners will reduce movement and protect walls from scuffing.

All shows will be consistent: framed work only or matted work only.

A photograph mounted on a mat board and unframed should be mounted using one of the following methods:
1. On a mat board (flush mounted).
2. With a window mat (over mat).
3. Floating mount.

2 hangers (available at art centers for about $.50 each) placed on the back of any unframed photograph with an attached wire will be considered appropriate.

All club show labels shall be standardized per the label instructions and shall contain only the photographer’s name, the name of the photograph or “untitled” and a selling price or an NFS.

Any exception to the above requirements may be submitted for consideration to the Executive Committee of the Redwood Camera Club.

The Show Curator has final say as to the integrity of the framing at the time of exhibition. Any photograph may be subject to refusal to hang by the Show Curator and/or hanging committee.

LABEL INFORMATION:

Title of Photograph should be done in

The name of the photographer should
be done in 16 point regular Verdana
Price or nfs (not-for-sale) should be in 16 point Verdana and should be
aligned right.

The Umbrellas of Cherbourg
Pierre Auguste Renoir
$16.00

Verdana Eighteen (18)
Point Bold and center
justified
Verdana sixteen(16)point
Not bold, center justified
Aligned right for price or NFS

Similar fonts to Verdana, in case you don't have the font are (all in 18 pt. Bold):
Ariel
Estrangelo Edessa Microsoft Sans Serif Shruti

It looks to me like the spacing on some of the fonts other than Verdana would need adjusting by going to "character spacing" which can be found under "font" in Microsoft Word.

The practice sheet is best utilized by printing your labels first on a plain piece of paper and holding both sheets up to the light together to check your alignment. It's also the reason I left the lines on this sheet which can be used the same way.
