Remember that remake of "Mighty Joe Young" that came out a few years ago?Y'know,the one with Bill paxton in it?
...well...neither do I. But fret not,if you're in the mood for big monkey fun(and when aren't ya?)than look no further than "Mighty Peking Man!" A Hong Kong film made somewhere between the late 70's-early 80's(I'm too lazy to look up the facts),it's a fun romp of a picture that uses a well worn out King Kong/Tarzan premise,yet strangely enough it's much more entertaining than the two.Throw in a little jungle "Make Them Die Slowly"action.and a snazzy 70's musical score and you've got yourself a classic! I'm not gonna get into the whole plot of the thing(that's what watching the movie is for)but we've basically got a girl that is raised by a giant monkey who gets involved with a sharp dressing adventurer and heads to Honk Kong to make Mighty Monkey Boy a star. This movie uses every love story cliche but with glorious results.We've got the big misunderstood monkey(who looks like a rubbery Anthony Quinn),a sexy orphaned jungle girl,an evil corporate villian,a love scene that starts with the jungle girl and adventurer boy running in slow motion thru the jungle and ends with adventurer boy sucking snake poison out of jungle girls' creamy thighs,a jealous ex-girlfriend(of adventurer boys,not big monkey),natives getting mangled by jungle animals and even a monster (and I do mean monster!)truck pull! There's even a touching scene where we see animals cry when jungle girl decides to go with Johnny(adventurer boy)to the Big City! It's all really a live action Disney movie(well except for the scene where we see a native get his leg chewed off by a tiger,a few booby shots and when Monkey Boy steps on people). One scene that really cracked me up is when Johnny and Jungle Girl bring Monkey Boy to a big city without any warning what so ever,so it causes an instant panic(kinda like when Loverboy shows up to do a free concert).He should've at least passed out flyers first! I also loved the scene where Mighty Monkey Boy is stompin' around the city and a guy points to the sky and screams "it's Mighty Peking Man!!"as if no one would know who he was!Don't wanna mistake him for someone else!I guess the locals waltzing thru out the city are too buzy shoppin' to notice a rampaging giant monkey's in town! I don't know how I managed to never see this classic in my many,many years of watching giant monsters on parade flix,but thanx to Rolling Thunder(Pulp Fiction Guys' movie company)for re-releasing it and bringing it to us.I believe it's only available on dvd,but if you're a big fan of cheesy giant monster films than this is a must see! "Look Out!It's Mighty Peking Man!!!!!"
