My musical tastes reach quite a wide spectrum, from the classic crooning of Sinatra to the wall of crunchy evil from Cradle Of Filth. But the music that has won me over the most is Glam Rock.
Like the horror movies I enjoy,Glam takes you into a different world, both musically and visually.Hey,when I plop down hard earned cash for a concert I wanna see a show, dammit!Sure there's many performers who write great songs and are entertaining live-but nothing gets me rockin' more than Glam Rock.
Let's face it-platform boots rule!Garish make-up kicks ass!And feather boas are much cooler than plaid shirts and baggy pants anyday!Laugh all ya want at spandex and big hair, but Sammi Curr looks way cooler than Eddie Vedder! When I go to a show I wanna see a ROCKSTAR-not some whiney dope who looks like he's been out in the woods cuttin' lumber.
I could go on and on about how boring most of todays' bands are,but things are changing.Bands such as The Backyard Babies,Blue Period,The Marvelous 3,and The Toilet Boys are relighting the Glam torch.KISS and Alice Cooper are puttin' on the best shows of thier careers. And even the grungers are slippin' into leather and vinyl and slappin' on the eyeliner(STP,Goo Goo Dolls,Smashing Pumpkins).People are tired of watching musicians contemplating thier bellybuttons. We want a show!
At first I was going to go into the history of Glam, but you can find all that stuff by clickin' on the pictures and you'll be transported into those sites,so I thought I'd just throw a few ramblings at ya about my fave Glam records(Hey,it is MY site y'know)So here are just a few of my faves:
KISS"Destroyer"-Many might claim that KISS is not a proper Glam band, but you can't deny that "Destroyer"is one of the greatest Glam albums of all time. It's filled to the brim with classic teenage rompin' anthems-"Detroit Rock City","Flaming Youth","Do You Love Me",'Shout It Out Loud".
And live,no one could touch them!Bigger than life-KISS is the Godzilla of rock and roll, stompin it's eight inch leather heels thru every city, leaving destruction and glittery rhinestones in it's path!
Alice Cooper"Killer"-Where KISS is Godzilla,Alice is Dracula,Jack The Ripper and Dr.Jekyll/Mr.Hyde rolled all into one.More sinister and sneaky than KISS,Alices'"Killer"lp takes you into a gritty, dirty world of sleazy sexy teenage alienation with a clever sense of humour.
"Be My Lover" gave us weirdos a chance with the ladies,"You Drive Me Nervous" drove our parents nuts,"Dead Babies"scared the hell out of us,and the musical masterpiece of "Halo Of Flies"pissed us guitarists off trying to figure it out."Killer" also has one of the greatest album endings of all time, and nothing Glam rocks us more than "Under My Wheels".Alice Cooper(The man and the original band)is one of the most underrated rock bands in history. They should be up there with The Beatles and The Stones.
Marc Bolan & T Rex"The Essential Collection"-
OK,this is a greatest hits album, but what T Rex lacked in making complete albums,Marc Bolan wrote some of the most energetic and inspiring Glam classics of all time.Hell-he created the blueprint for Glam that all others would follow."20th Century Boy" has the coolest intro in rock,"Telegram Sam"saunters it's way out of the speakers,"Bang A Gong" with it's Chuck Berry riffs still stands up today and "Jeepster" is THE ultimate Glam song.Whatever Happened To The Teenage Dream?
New York Dolls"New York Dolls"-When people think of Glam today, they usually think of 80's pop/metal bands such as Poison and Motley Crue, but there was one band that took the Glam image, mixed it with the Shangri-La's sound and soaked it in whiskey and created a much sleazier version of Glam that the 80's bands tried to recreate but didn't quite do it as good as The Dolls. The New York Dolls, and especially guitarist Johnny Thunders, created the most complete perfect whole Glam album ever.Killer rippin' riffs, punky rythms and David Johansens' throaty vocals made Glam dangerous.Without the Dolls there never would have been a Faster Pussycat,Hanoi Rocks or Guns n' Roses.Hell, even Steve Jones of the Sex Pistols admits to stealing everything from Johnny Thunders. They were ugly, yet beautiful-like a tarted up car accident. If you say you're into Glam and don't have this album then you have no idea what Glam is all about.
The Sweet"Desolation Boulevard"-Where The Dolls put the sleaze in Glam,The Sweet slicked it up,pomped it out and created a larger than life sound full of harmonies and pop theatrics. They had some great teenage anthems too!"Ballroom Blitz"jitters it's way into rock n' roll history,"Fox On The Run"captured teenage lust,"A.C.D.C."introduced us to girl on girl thrills, and we all cried "Set Me Free"at the world!Rebellious yet strangely commercial,The Sweet craeted a classic Glam sound, also copied by many 80's bands.
So That's my 5 fave Glam albums of all time.I know someone out there's gonna be pissed that I didn't mention David Bowie, but, even though I dig him alot,he never had the impact on me that those five Monsters of Glam did.And many scoff at the 80's Glam bands, but hey, they did keep Glam alive.Such groovy bands such as Faster Pussycat,Japan,Poison,Motley Crue and Guns n' Roses put out some major fuckin' cool Glam albums.Twisted Sister,Wasp and EZO carried on the shock rock theatrics. And today we have the cool Rob Zombie,The Donnas,Marvelous 3.Dads' Porno Mag, and Marilyn Manson(who's only drawback is that he lacks a sense of humour).
Glam Rock ma not be the hip thing it used to be,but that's ok.It's what caught my attention in the first place.Glam has always been on the fringe of rock music.Critics never liked it,musicians usually find it technically unchallenging, and most "jock rockers' find it too feminine for thier homophobic egos. But,hence, there's the reason Glam will always be cool to me.It questions societys' conventional tastes,it's sense of humour is lost on the dimwitted. It's purpose isn't just to shock, but to grab your attention. It celebrates freedom, and makes everyday a little bit more like Halloween.
and hey,all you rap/metal rockers lighten up will ya?
