[5] Shamanism/Rain making
Shamanistic rain making practises were encouraged by encounters and have always formed a part of Jewish religious practise [see the Zohar]. Biblical archetypal rainmakers include Noah [EW36 4Q534-6], Phinehas [both venerated at Qumran] and Elijah. The Interpreters Bible series tells us that Jeremiah [22: 5 ] prays to God for rain. This is not surprising as Yahweh is revered as the rain giver [6 558]:
Deut 11:13-17 - God can grant or withhold rain depending on obedience to his will.
God is also rain giver as the mother Abba/ the Sefirah of Wisdom/ Chokhmah [Jewish Lore 163].

Prayers for rain are still made today on the last day of the Sukkot/Tabernacles festival reconstituted at Qumran.
These practises were of course in evidence in the time of the Scrolls:
EW260/1 4Q318 Choni-Ha-Meaggel, ‘the Circle-Drawer’ was a ‘rainmaker’ just before storming of Temple in 63BC. He drew circles to bring rain. Jewish Lore p163 states that he slept for 70 years and that saintly men seem to influence rainfall.
The sect favoured such practises [the evocation of rain and its connection with eschatological Judgement is strong in the War Scroll]. In fact, they were regarded as impostors & magicians who were even more dangerous than violent revolutionaries because they were scheming to bring about both religious reform & change in government.
James the Just[brother of Jesus], who became the Qumran mystic sects’ representative during the formative years of Christianity, was another primordial rain maker. The letter ascribed to James abounds with the imagery of rainmaking in its apocalyptic & climactic final chapter, evoking one of the first archetypes in this tradition connected to apocalyptic Judgement - Elijah [5:7-18] [also see 2Sam 21:6,9-14 Isaiah 57:5, Jer 7:31 T385-6,392/5].
Rainmaking symbolism can also be identified in the ‘Sons of Thunder’, Boanerges, James and John[ Mark 3:17]. They were Pillar apostles like James and Peter [ Gal 2:9, Abingdon 4.2].

the term ‘rain’ can be viewed both mundanely and eschatologically:
Dan 7, Mark 14:62 the Son of Man sitting on the right hand of Power and coming with/on the clouds of Heaven...raining down judgement.
In 4Q554 we meet again the City described in Ezekiel:
[ In the Scrolls, as in Ezekiel, there are inherent difficulties in using words to convey ideas that could not until this century be described in an architectural drawing.]
And the Lord said [to Ezekiel] ‘ ..I will measure the time & shorten the days and the years a little

The Pharisees, whom Jesus favoured, were dependent on a lunar calendar that was only later harmonised, following Roman developments and other extant examples, with a solar year. The eventual lunisolar calendar of 354 days relied mainly on observations of the [New] Moon. D78,106?
Qumran wanted an intellectual calendar of fixed dates for major festivals, temple services and courses which had a harmonious total mathematical scheme not dependent on human failings [i.e. on seeing New Moon] . Feast days were now at the beginning of weeks in a 364 day year inclusive of intercalated solar/lunar days. Lunar observations were kept as an additional check.
