What is Qnexa?

Currently, over 400 million people around the world are clinically obese, this accounts for a staggering proportion of the world’s population. More than 72 million people in America suffer from obesity, and are heading towards a life plagued by diabetes, hypertension or cardiovascular disease; they are also more susceptible to suffer from a stroke in the near future. Believe it or not, obesity is the 2nd most preventable death within the whole of America, so if it’s so preventable, why does it take so many lives?

Obesity is frustrating and depressing, many sufferers find they get stuck in a loop of diet and giving up – mainly because conventional diets don’t seem to be giving the results most Americans are seeking, causing them to give up early. For many years, we have been searching for a medication that can aid weight loss, and result in a significant reduction of weight over a reasonable amount of time, and recently, a medication has been discovered which could potentially do this.

Although it is still within its testing phases, Qnexa has many people talking. Obesity accounts for nearly $150 billion dollars annually, so many of us have been desperately tracking down some form of medication which could not only help our struggling economy, but also help to save lives by finally preventing thousands of deaths all over America caused by obesity. The medication itself is currently being investigated so that its effects are fully accounted for, however, so far the prognosis has been good, and it’s expected to be released over the next few years.

The medication will be taken once a day orally, and has been said to control-release a low dosage of a unique formulation - topiramate and phentermine. Both of these drugs have been approved for use, with Phentermine being approved in 1959, and Topiramate more recently in 1996. Phentermine, when originally approved, has bee proved to provide positive results in the form of weight reduction and behaviour modification – changing your opinion on food, and reducing cravings throughout the day. It is actually widely prescribed as a weight loss therapy throughout America, but it wasn’t until it was combined with Topiramate that it began to display significant results.

Topiramate was actually proved as a useful treatment for epilepsy and migraine, however, when investigators combined it with Phentermine, they launched their investigations to fully explore the effects of this unique combination. Testing was carried out on around 4,500 people in order to study whether it works and any potential side effects.

As testing continued, some side effects were detected, such as constipation, dry mouth and pins and needles; however, this was only displayed in a small percentage of people, and was not considered uncomfortable or difficult to live with. Qnexa was also covered on a popular night time news show, where weight loss results seen were beyond belief. It was also linked with an improvement in respiratory threats, such as cardiovascular disease, helping to prevent the problem from occurring due to obesity.

Qnexa has the potential to be an incredible weight loss aid that can not only give the confidence back to thousands of Americans struggling with their weight, but can change America forever by drastically reducing the amount of obesity cases discovered each day.

Another trial weight loss medication is Lorcaserin, although it may not have produced as high of weight loss in its clinical testing, what is making it attractive to potential users is that is has very low side effects. If Lorcaserin is approved, it is possible that a doctor could attempt a patient on this one first due to its low side effects and see how the patient responds. From there if they think the patient needs something stronger, than perhaps a doctor would then consider another drug.
Recent discussion surrounding this possible medication has revealed that its trademark name will likely be Lorqess® both sites seemingly are following the news associated with this possible medication. It appears that September 16th will be a pivotal day in determining Lorcaserin's future.
Well Lorcaserin did not fair as some had hoped. Lorcaserin has been benched due to safety concerns, particularly issues to do with tumors in rats. However some say that this was way overblown as the tumors only appeared in rats taking extremely high amounts of Lorcaserin and a rats system behaves differently from humans. As a result Arena plans on continued research and re-submit it before the FDA in the 2nd half of 2011.

In other related obesity medication news, in December of 2010, the trial medication for treating obesity Contrave® went before the FDA advisory doctors and received a positive vote in support of it. The vote was 13-7 to have it approved. January 31st is when the true decision will be made by the FDA. It is most likely that since the panel advisory was 13-7 in favor that the FDA will pass this drug.
