Our Lady Peace Frontman Pushed To Sickness Writing 'Gravity' Lyrics

Our Lady Peace's latest album, Gravity, has spawned the hit "Somewhere Out There," but writing the lyrics to that song and others on the album was no easy task. Singer-songwriter Raine

Maida told us, "I was definitely challenged more this time."

He also revealed that working with Bob Rock in the producer's Hawaiian studios literally made him sick, but he's grateful.

"I had to leave Maui for a few days to go to UCLA hospital because I wasn't sleeping, because I was up constantly writing lyrics at night. I ended up getting this weird shingles thing, which is like this nerve-viral disease in your nervous system or something. Yeah, man it's because of Bob. He just kept pushing and pushing, and I thank God because I'm really happy with the lyrics."

Maida admits this album is the most personal, and he told us what the process was like with Rock.

"Lyrically, he would sit down and say, 'What are you talking about?' And I'd say, 'Well, look, this is what I'm...' I'd show him lyrics to kind of identify what the themes were and he was like, 'Man I don't get it.' And he'd just be outright and honest like that and bold faced. And he'd just say, 'I'm just not getting what you're saying. I know when you explain it to me, but it shouldn't be that difficult. I don't think you want it to be that difficult. So let's just go back and reassess stuff."

Our Lady Peace's Gravity is at Number 31 on the Billboard 200 album chart, and the single, "Somewhere Out There," has gone top 10 on the Billboard Modern Rock chart.
