"Specializing in gourmet coffee, breakfast, sandwiches, salads, psta and desserts, ask about daily specials"
It has been said that in Ocean Springs you can not throw a rock without hitting either an artist or a doctor's wife. I will not delve into the validity of that statement here. I have noticed, however, that those two groups do tend to make up the major customer base for the Bayview Gourmet. The Bayview Gourmet is a nice quaint little restaurant on Government Street in downtown Ocean Springs. The business was established a few years ago after remodeling an old salvation army building from the 1920's. The Bayview Gourmet has become a popular breakfast and lunch spot among the residents of Ocean Springs. The decor and menu are clearly designed with the female palate in mind. The menu features a variety of sandwiches named for streets in Ocean Springs made on a fresh baked focaccia bread (a real rarity on the Coast). There is a very large selection of salads with fresh vegetables and fruit throughout. There are daily specials, usually just little twists on the regular menu items, and several home cooked soups offered as well. All in all the Bayview Gourmet stands out as a very good lunch restaurant. Outdoor seating is available and at peek times, if the climate is permitting, this is preferable as all the hard surfaces tend to cause the volume level inside to get quite high. Men, it may not be a typical "guy" place, but you should keep it in mind when you want to treat that special lady to a lunch "she" will enjoy.
Menu Recommendations:
Tomato Basil Soup - A house specialty offered every day, thick and flavorful, not to be missed.
The Bowen Avenue Sandwich - A toasted turkey sandwich served on focaccia bread and dressed with a nice red onion balsamic topping.
Chicken Tortilla Soup - Very good, quite spicy. Although it is not the traditional Mexican recipe.
Menu Warnings:
French Toast - This dish has never had the nice crispy texture that I look for in French Toast and would benefit greatly from the addition to more vanilla and a bit of nutmeg in the batter.
Philly Steak Sandwich - Without a doubt placed on the menu to offer something to the husbands and boyfriends. Preparation is rudimentary with very little effort or imagination.
