Burger-Burger
1039 Howard Avenue, Biloxi, MS (228) 432-5183
Have you ever reminisced about something from your youth that you remembered with great fondness? "Boy, if we still had _______. That was the best ever. Never been anything as good as that." We have all said or heard things like this about everything from cars to television programs. This type of idealized memory seems to be particularly vehement when applied to our favorite restaurants. People that remember the 50's and 60's in Biloxi now have an opportunity to put this cliche to the test. The Burger-Burger has returned. A Burger-Burger is a hamburger poor boy made on Biloxi style french bread and dressed with mustard, chilli, and grilled onions. Biloxi's "baby boomers" have bemoaned the loss of Burger-Burger for 20 years. Now the original recipe has been purchased and a new establishment has taken up the challenge of restoring a legend. It has only been 6 months so it is too early to make predictions about how long this incarnation of Burger-Burger will last but the locals I have spoken with are very satisfied. "I skipped class 2-3 times a week at Notre Dame in the fifties. I would go over to Burger-Burger for 3 footer for 35 cents. I remember clearly Mr. Abbey had a sign '36" for 35 cents'. The football coach that watched the gate would let us sneak back in if we brought him one too." said one pleased local. " Well, they aren't 35 cents anymore and not as big,but you can't miss that taste. It is a perfect reproduction." Without the prejudice of nostalgia I recently sat down for my first Burger-Burger. As advertised the sandwich (I ordered a half for $5.95) was two, seemingly, hand pressed hamburger patties on a 10 inch length of french bread. I got it dressed with the flavorful mixture of yellow mustard, grilled onions, and a sauce that was more a chili flavored gravy than actual chili. My opinion? Very positive. Quite a tasty combination and very good quality ground beef. I asked if the Burger-Burger could be ordered dressed like a traditional hamburger. The friendly lady behind the counter humored me and said, " Sure Hon, you can order it anyway you like. But why would you want to do that? That wouldn't be a Burger-Burger." You know I think she's right. To Biloxians they are not selling a sandwich, they are selling a memory. Can a locally bottled Barq's in a diamond cut glass bottle be far behind? The Covert Diner hopes not.
Menu Recommendations:
The Burger-Burger - Simple and to the point
Menu Warnings:
Plate Lunch Specials and regular Poor Boys - These items are obviously offered to add variety to the menu. They are not the focus of the restaurant and can be found much better elsewhere.
