Background A recent study by Price Waterhouse Coopers for the United States Treasury department found that 40% of the U.S. workforce has no bank account. That percentage is up from 28% in just three years. An additional 12% with bank accounts are denied a debit card. A still larger segment of the population has no major credit card. This large number of �un-banked� and �underbanked� families has risen sharply in recent years as U.S. banks have increased the cost of basic checking accounts while also raising the requirements.
The study also found that the majority of the un-banked are not without a bank willingly. These are not �dead beats� but substantial people who for one reason or another have had a bad banking experience that has resulted in �black listing.� Over 22% are professional and managerial are un-banked as well as 40% of college students and military. Over 60% of people receiving social security have no bank account even though they are generally asset-rich. These un-banked are shut out of many basic financial transactions and must pay much higher fees than the banked just to conduct normal family financial business.
The High Costs of Being Un-banked Being without a bank account is both an economic burden and a social stigma. The un-banked have much higher costs and must resort to extraordinary means just to conduct the daily business of living!
