If you don't have major medical coverage the expense will be paid out of your savings account. With inexpensive PPO plans available, this is just not nessesary.
There are two major types of health insurance plans:
PPOs (Preferred Provider Organization): You choose your own doctor. Sometimes the physcian will bill your insurance company directly. Most medical expenses these pays are negotiated ahead of time. If you decide to go to a doctor outside of the provider network, there are not negotiated prices, so you are responsible for anything extra above fair and reasonable costs. Expect to have co-payments and co-insurance, as nothing with a preferred provider organization is fully paid for.
HMOs (Health Maintenance Organization): Has almost all fuly paid services but a higher premium. You need to select a primary care physcian before you enrolling. Visits usually cost $10 or $15, and as in a PPO, most procedures are negotiated and usually do not have deductibles or co insurance charges.
