Many people today are concerned with what encircles the domain of Hypnosis? So many articles, courses and content has been written over the matter that the boundaries seem
be confusing and often misleading. Some learn hypnosis to hypnotize other people, some learn hypnosis to hypnotize friends to take revenge, so learn hypnosis to better understand their state of mind and themselves, some learn hypnosis to understand how the mind works.

So what essentially is hypnosis? Coming back to the topic at hand, Hypnosis, is often referred to as an altered state of mind or consciousness - this is not at all true. Most of the supposed hypnotic state indicators suggest that hypnosis can achieved without the subject relaxing - this is known as waking hypnosis and is quite a powerful tool, while out on dates, going for interviews, closing many business deals, or trying to persuade your wife to forgive you, increase your pain threshold, even reduce pain, etc! For this and many other reasons, Hypnosis, still remains a very controversial subject, albeit anyone who wants to learn hypnosis, can do so, while opting for the various hypnosis training courses available in the market today. There are currently two categories of theories, state and non state hypnosis, that are responsible for the research in modern day hypnosis. Well, what do people who have been hypnotized have to say about getting hypnotized? Well, a lot of them, approximately seventy nine percent of these people feel or rather experience an altered or changed state of mind, often, after waking up from hypnosis, these people find themselves relaxed and much calmer. Personally, when I was hypnotized, everyone has to hypnotize themselves during the first series of practical's in the hypnosis training course, I had gone blank, as if a switch had been turned on or off, the way you want to perceive it, and I was mindlessly answering questions, It more so a state during which I was more in sedated state on mind. Over the years hypnosis has received some pretty bad press, some justified, but much of the criticism has come from those who do not truly understand the power of hypnosis. However things are slowly changing, and it is now generally accepted even in the medical profession that hypnosis is real and can be a very powerful tool.

Hypnosis is simply a mental state induced by a hypnotic induction, commonly composed of a series of preliminary instructions and suggestions. Whilst in the hypnotic state subjects will be in a state of heightened suggestibility where they are far more likely to believe or perform what they are being told. It can be very effective on some people, and have no effect on others, it really depends on the individual and their state of mind as to whether hypnosis will have any effect or not.

Whilst there is no scientific explanation of what hypnosis is or how it works, it is generally accepted that hypnosis is real and does have its uses with some people that can achieve quite remarkable results. It wasn't that long ago that the only type of hypnosis people knew of was stage hypnosis. You have probably seen this at a show or on TV where volunteers are picked from the audience and hypnotized to perform silly acts for the enjoyment of the rest of the remaining audience. However nowadays in the 21st century hypnosis has evolved and we now have different types of hypnosis like self-hypnosis, Ericksonian hypnosis and NLP hypnosis to name a few. This article looks to define the different types types of hypnosis you may not be so familiar with.

Traditional Hypnosis

Traditional hypnosis has been around for a while now and is what most people think of when they hear the term hypnosis. Traditional hypnosis is when the hypnotist puts the subject into a hypnotic trance and then tells the subject what to do by giving direct commands and suggestions. This is where stage hypnosis has evolved from.

Traditional hypnosis has received some bad press over the years and unfortunately some of it is justified. There have been many stories of actors and stooges playacting in the performance, and at the other extreme people have become stuck in a hypnotic state of terror unable to fully awaken. Having said this traditional hypnosis can be a fun and effective tool when used by an experienced hypnotist.

Hypnotherapy

Using hypnosis to promote healing or positive development in any way is known as hypnotherapy. It is usually used to tackle psychological problems within the mind as this is where hypnosis can very powerful. When successful hypnotherapy can reprogram patterns of behaviour within the mind and can allow things like phobias, irrational fears, addictions and negative emotions to be controlled. Hypnotherapy can also be used to control the sensations of pain, and hypnosis has been used to perform surgery on fully conscious patients who would be in obvious agony if not for the use of hypnosis.

Contrary to common myths, hypnotherapy does not involve any form of deep sleep, in fact the subject is actually said to be fully awake and in a heightened state of awareness. However the patient must remain fully focused on the therapy and the success of hypnotherapy depends on the patients ability to focus on what is being said, establishing a good rapport with the therapist is essential. The patient must believe in the treatment and enter the therapy with an open mind or the treatment will almost certainly be unsuccessful.

Self Hypnosis

Self hypnosis (also known as auto hypnosis) is a self induced form of hypnosis and usually involves the subject learning a set of procedures, or following a recording or some other form of media. Usually this is another form of hypnotherapy and a hypnotherapist will often teach or recommend self-hypnosis to their patients. It can also be used for relaxation and has been compared with meditation.

The only difference between hypnosis and self hypnosis is that when you are using self-hypnosis you will be acting on the suggestions of yourself rather than any third party. In fact it has been said that all forms of hypnosis are actually self-hypnosis because the subject is going through the same processes in their mind, a hypnotist merely helps the subject into the trance state and offer their suggestions, but it is the subject that processes these thoughts in their minds. The end result is the same whether using self-hypnosis or being hypnotized by a third party.

The uses of self-hypnosis are very similar to those of hypnotherapy and can be used to combat psychological problems like phobias, addictions, stress and other psychological problems. It can also be used to enter an advanced state of relaxation and this is why self hypnosis is often compared with those who are meditating.

NLP Hypnosis

NLP hypnosis (neuro-linguistic programming) is another form of hypnosis similar to self hypnosis but concentrates more on peoples behaviours. NLP began as a form of psychological therapy similar to hypnosis and was originally used to tackle similar psychological problems like phobias, depression, habit and learning disorders. Whilst this is still the case, today NLP is seen more as a self-help tool and is often used to promote a sense of well being. NLP is growing rapidly worldwide and becoming increasingly popular in the professional world. NLP courses are becoming popular within big businesses, particularly in management training, life coaching and self-help.

NLP hypnosis is used to tackle psychological or behavioural problems or to simply improve ones sense of well being. It is a great tool for motivation and improving self confidence, although again it is unclear in the scientific community exactly what NLP is or how it works.

Ericksonian Hypnosis

Also known as conversational hypnosis or covert hypnosis, Ericksonian hypnosis is when a subject can be hypnotized within a normal conversation, often without the subject realizing they are being hypnotized at all.

Ericksonian hypnosis or conversational hypnosis was started by the hypnotherapist Dr Milton H. Erickson, who learnt to use his speech so effectively after becoming paralyzed and seriously ill himself. After contracting polio at the age of 17 he was essentially bed ridden for long periods, but during this time he learnt the significance of non-verbal communication - things like body language and tone of voice.

This form of hypnosis can be used on those who are skeptical about hypnotherapy or more traditional hypnosis, and has been said to be more effective on those who are more skeptical. It can be used by therapists during conversation and bypasses the traditional stage where a hypnotist will 'induce trance' before performing their work, although according to Erickson the patient will still enter this trance like state, but it will happen within a few second using clever hypnotic language and techniques during normal conversation.

Whilst this form of hypnosis was originally developed as a form of hypnotherapy it is now being used by everyday people in everyday life. There are many courses around nowadays that claim you can control others to do what you want if you can learn the powers of conversational hypnosis. There are even stories of conversational hypnosis being used in more sinister ways, like in Italy recently when a man used this form of hypnosis to get a bank cashier to hand over the cash simply by asking her to do so. Whilst incidents like this are very rare, there is no doubt that this form of hypnosis is real and can be very effective on certain people if you put in the time to learn the techniques.

Whether you are learning how to be a hypnotist or thinking about going to a hypnotist/hypnotherapist for help, it is important to have a clear idea of what hypnosis is as well as what it is not. Why?

Well, as far as becoming a hypnotist is concerned, you need to be able to quell people's fears about being hypnotized. Many people have common misconceptions about hypnosis that have been fueled by movies (think Manchurian Candidate), stage and comedy hypnosis shows, and various other forms of media. These misconceptions can cause people to resist going into hypnosis. When you, as the hypnotist, clear these misconceptions up, you will increase your chances of hypnotizing your client/subject successfully!

Now as far as being the person undergoing hypnosis, having misconceptions about hypnosis can decrease your chances of receiving the full benefits of hypnosis, as you are likely to resist going into hypnosis. When you get those misconceptions cleared up, you can relax and enjoy the process as you go into hypnosis, and you will receive the full benefits that hypnosis has to offer you.

To help the hypnotist and the person being hypnotized alike, I have included the eight most common misconceptions and myths about hypnosis below with an explanation of the truth about hypnosis.

1. The Good, the Bad, the Ugly Hypnosis.

Let us face it, all hypnosis is not the same. Do not be fooled. There is good, bad, and so-so hypnosis. It all depends on how it is done and who is doing it. The best form of hypnosis is performed by a skilled hypnotist/hypnotherapist who has a good foundation of proven psychological principles to help you get what you need most effectively.

There really is a load of crap out in the hypnosis world today. In today's world, people are learning more and more to think for themselves and do not like to be told what to do. All of that old "you are getting veddy, veddy sleepy" stuff is outdated and ineffective. Thank goodness that science and psychology (as well as many great hypnotists) have elevated hypnosis to a much higher plain today. Although I still think there is some great value in direct hypnosis (in certain situations), my personal feeling is that indirect/conversational hypnosis is, by far, on the "razor' edge" as far as effectiveness and being up to date.

Also, be really careful and hold onto your wallet because there are many hypnosis hucksters selling "hypnotic snake oil" products such as low-rate subliminal messages and pseudo-spirituality stuff ("You are now completely whole because you are 'at one' with the universe."). Do not get me wrong, I am not against all subliminal messages, and I do think that hypnosis can be used in combination with spirituality. I am just saying that there are a whole lot of charlatans out there who are willing to sell you anything in the name of real hypnosis. Many of these people have no real experience and training in hypnosis whatsoever!

2. Only mental weaklings can be hypnotized/I cannot be hypnotized.

Perhaps you have heard that "smart" people cannot be hypnotized. Part of the reason behind this myth is just plain, old, bad hypnosis like I mentioned above. People do not like to be ordered around and told stuff like, "Your eyes ARE feeling so heavy that you CANNOT open your eyes!" while they are thinking to themselves, "Oh, YES I CAN!" Most people do not find that sort of thing to be very pleasant and so they simply do not go into hypnosis. It is that simple.

On the other hand, when you really get to experience being skillfully and gently directed into a state of deep relaxation and focus, you will realize that you can, in fact, be hypnotized. In reality, anyone with sound mental faculties and a reasonable amount of intelligence can be hypnotized. Truth be told, experience shows that people who are intelligent and have a creative mind make the best hypnosis subjects/clients because they can "think outside the box" and do not limit their imaginations about what is possible for them.

3. Hypnosis is not mind control/you are not the hypnotist's puppet.

The only person who has absolute control over your mind is you. A hypnotist cannot make you do something you are not willing to do. Bizarre news stories, stage hypnotists, and people who do not know much about hypnosis have promoted this myth for far too long.

That being said, a person can use hypnosis and persuasion techniques (both for good and for bad purposes) to cause another person to become more willing to do what they say and accept their suggestions. Ultimately, though, each person has the power to make his/her own decisions (even under hypnosis). A hypnotist cannot force anyone to do anything against his/her will (including go against their morals) unless already willing to do so in the first place.

Generally speaking, the hypnotist serves as somewhat of a guide to lead you into a relaxed and focused state and uses psychologically sound hypnotic techniques to help you make changes or experience certain things that you want to experience.

4. Hypnosis is not sleep.

People who try hypnosis for the first time often come out of it a little disappointed because of this myth. They say things like, "I could hear everything you said" or "I felt like I could open my eyes and walk out if I wanted to." In reality, when you are in hypnosis, you can be aware of everything that is going on around you.

In hypnosis, you are simply deeply relaxed and highly focused. When you sleep, your conscious faculties seem to disappear for a while. When you wake up, they seem to return to you. Hypnosis is kind of the "middle ground" between these two states of consciousness. It is not the same as when you are asleep, nor is it the same as when you are wide awake.

One of the causes behind this misconception is that hypnotists often use the word "SLEEP!" as a command to put someone into hypnosis. This is because sleep is used as a metaphor for helping someone go into hypnosis. I will teach you more about hypnotic metaphors in later articles.

5. You cannot get "stuck" in hypnosis.

No one has ever gotten stuck in hypnosis. The only reason a person would stay in hypnosis is because it feels fantastic to be so relaxed and focused. Some people do not want to come out of hypnosis because they do not want that feeling to go away. The worst thing that would happen if the hypnotist left or suddenly died while the person was in hypnosis is that the hypnotized person would most likely fall asleep and wake up feeling really good.

6. Hypnosis is not amnesia.

You will not forget everything that happened while you were in hypnosis. Remember, hypnosis is not sleep. You are not unconscious while you are in hypnosis. You are just very relaxed and highly focused. Now, a hypnotist can suggest that a person forget everything that was said during the hypnosis session, resulting in the person not remembering. However, as a general rule, people tend to remember everything that happens while in hypnosis.

7. You will not reveal your deep, dark secrets in hypnosis.

As I said before, you are in control of your own mind and will be even when you are in hypnosis. You will not reveal anything you do not want others to know unless you want to. Hypnosis can, however, be used as a way to help people explore and deal with those things that they would not normally want to talk about under normal circumstances. This is always done with the person's consent and usually in the context of hypnotherapy.

8. You will not become someone else.

You will always be you when you are in hypnosis. That being said, a hypnotist can use hypnosis to help another person explore what it would be like to "become" another person. This is usually done so that the subject/client can experience what it would be like to have the traits that the person they are "becoming" possesses (for instance, confidence). The hypnotized person can then bring this trait back with them into their own personality when they come out from being in hypnosis. (I will teach you the techniques to elicit this hypnotic phenomenon in later articles)

Hypnosis is not a new phenomena, it has been used for centuries as a tool to amaze, impress and to help treat and cure. For years it was considered some paranormal, fringe, new age fad. However, now it is recognized as a true effect and its application accepted by mainstream science. The public at large are becoming more familiar with it and the skepticism of old is fading.

There principles of hypnosis remain the same for which ever method is used, but there are different routes to achieve it. Some methods are as old as hypnosis, but others are the product of research and new techniques have therefore been created. The type of hypnosis used usually is dependent on the outcome that is required. All have their value, and the learning of any one opens the doors to the other methods. Here are the main types:

Traditional Hypnosis

Traditional hypnosis is the classic model of hypnosis and has been around for a long time. It is the version conducted by a hypnotist who puts the subject into a deep trance and then directs them by using suggestions and commands. Stage hypnotism uses this technique.

The traditional hypnosis method has been much maligned and ridiculed over the years mostly unjustified, but unfortunately some of the criticism is correct. The use of fake hypnosis employing stage plants and actors has undermined the true traditional hypnosis method. Applied correctly it is a valuable and effective tool which can both fun and helpful.

Hypnotherapy

Hypnosis as used in hypnotherapy, can also have physical effects, the most obvious being the blocking of pain allowing surgical procedures to be undertaken without the harm and risks associated with anesthesia.

Hypnotherapy usually only uses very light hypnosis, not the deep trance state used in the traditional form. Most patients are fully awake and fully aware. The key point of the hypnotherapy is that the patient must remain fully focused on the therapy and listening to the words the therapist is saying. Keeping a good rapport with the therapist is essential. If the patient does not have faith in or believes the therapy will not work then it will fail. However, if the patient is positive and is open minded, the success rate is very high.

Self Hypnosis/Auto Hypnosis

As the name suggests, this method relies on the subject inducing hypnosis on themselves. This is done by the subject learning a set of procedures, or by listening to a recording. Most self hypnosis is delivered as hypnotherapy and is similar to deep relaxation and meditation.

Hypnosis and self hypnosis are very similar. The key difference is that the subject is working on their own suggestions rather than that of someone else. It is widely held view that all hypnosis is in reality self hypnosis. This is because the hypnotist may provide the suggestions, but it is the evaluation and interpretation these suggestions in the subjects own mind that heralds the results. The hypnotist is merely the vehicle that assists the subject into trance, but it is the subject that processes the information. Regardless, the result is the same.

Self hypnosis can be used In a very similar way to hypnotherapy, and is effective in overcoming psychological problems, phobias, stress and addictions. It is often used to simply promote a state of deep relaxation.

NLP Hypnosis

Some of you may have heard of NLP or (neuro-linguistic programming). This has is it origins as a psychological therapy, dealing with psychological disorders, phobias, depression, habits and learning disorders. The NLP method is still widely used however it is now more widely used as a self help tool to assist and promote feelings of well being. This form of hypnosis can be used on those who are skeptical about hypnotherapy or more traditional hypnosis, and has been said to be more effective on those who are more skeptical.

This technique can be used on those who are skeptical about hypnosis or who are unaware that they are being hypnotised. Skeptical subjects appear to be more susceptible to this technique. The use of hypnotic language and hypnosis techniques within ordinary conversation can induce trance very quickly. This trance state is low level but very effective.

This hypnosis method was originally developed as a hypnotherapy technique, but it has become more used by everyday people in the daily lives. The technique allows the individual to take more control of their lives and use these techniques to assist them in many everyday situations. There are many different courses available teaching these techniques, claiming that you can take control of others. This is true to some extent, and it is clear this form of hypnosis is real and effective. The process is relatively simple, but it will take time to master the method.

We drift in and out of hypnosis many times during any given day. Examples of this are when you miss out your exit while driving on the highway or lose track of time while watching television.

5) The hypnotherapist has no power and cannot control you in any way. The hypnotherapist is merely your guide like a ASherpa@, who guides you up a mountain. You are the one doing the climbing.
Many stage hypnotists want the public to believe that they hold great power. You do have to remember that stage shows are done with VOLUNTEERS.
Buttom-line : No hypnotist, no matter how great can have another person do anything that is immoral, illegal or Afattening@ in hypnosis.

6) Hypnosis is not a truth serum. A liar is a better liar in hypnosis. This is the reason why hypnosis is NEVER accepted in court as verifiable proof.
On the other hand though, the human mind registers every piece of data presented to it and can recall it in hypnosis. For example, a person can be brought into hypnosis (voluntarily) and recall a license plate number - and then use this evidence as a starting point for a police investigation.

7) The power of hypnosis is limitless. It is as vast as the human imagination. Most very successful people have succeeded because they imagined and saw themselves as being successful.
Successful athletes call " being in the zone " that very focused and powerful state they go into when achieving top performances. This state is nothing else than hypnosis of course!

8) You can change your internal programming in hypnosis because it addresses your subconscious mind (your hard disk). Therefore, if your childhood has been tinted with negative programming such as: "You are a burden, you are not loved, you are not wanted, etc", you might have acted accordingly to that belief from the beginning. You now have the power to turn this around and become the successful, accomplished, loved and loving person you deserve and want to be.

9) A willing person can achieve a perfect, natural anesthesia of his/her body with the help of hypnosis. There are numerous films of people going through major surgeries and natural childbirth with minimal or no discomfort at all - with only hypnosis as the sole anesthesia.
The comfortable level of anesthesia learned and achieved by my patients in self-hypnosis programs happen too often to be considered pure luck.

10) You cannot Alose@ hypnosis. It is a natural and easy way of life. With the help of hypnosis, you can achieve almost anything you want.
I often compare hypnosis with love: a pleasant, natural state of mind that helps us become the person we aspire to be. Not unlike love, one cannot lose hypnosis. It is always present for us to grab and use.

In Conclusion : I have opened a gateway for you today. It is normal that some fear and skepticism remains. For example, Franz Anton Mesmer was brought before a committee who was commissioned to determine if hypnosis was an existing phenomenon. Their conclusion would decide if Mesmer was really having an impact in all those people who claimed they were transformed by his hypnotic interventions.

The committee, which included Benjamin Franklin, concluded that hypnosis was not a recognizable phenomenon because it could neither be measured nor seen at the time. From that day on, Mesmer suffered a decline and gradually ceased helping people with hypnosis.
The irony of this story is that Benjamin Franklin later discovered electricity that changed our lives greatly. Just like hypnosis, electricity was a phenomenon that could neither be seen nor measured, yet it undeniably existed and was very powerful...

Now, imagine what can happen if hypnosis has the power to open your subconscious mind as fast as a light switch!
Napoleon Hill said it best when he said: "Whatever your mind can conceive and believe it can achieve".
