Fuel Tank Polishing

When working a fuel tank, remember the things that will hurt you!. I mean, the look is cool , but the things above, will hurt if your not aware of them. Always see were your going and whats in your way. LIGHTBARS, WIRE'S, FLASH, ECT::

If the fuel tank is old or new, you can get a mirror finish using a buffing wheel and rouge. First of all inspect the tank, for pitting, scratches, tar, ect... If needed remove any tar or grease with mineral spirits, then remove the film left over from the mineral spirits. If needed sand the surface use a finish sander with 320 grit sand paper, or higher. Don't try to remove all pitting because this would take forever. and you will be able to get a mirror finish with-out all that extra work. I'll leave the choice up to you.

Know that the prepping is done, apply some 3M Suppper Duty rubbing compound on the tank with #0000 steel wool, leaving the compound on heavy so that it can help cut the sanding marks out. Know get the buffer/grinder and put on a 10" yellow pad (with safety flanges). Using the tripoili rouge (red) apply the bar to the pad, and starting from the bottom, start cutting the tank. Over lapping your work about a 1/4" a time, going from side to side. Keep going with this step till the compound is removed. At this time the tank should look a little dull, but shinny.

The next step is to either apply more compound or work with the Tripoili Rouge buy itself depending on how many scratches are still in the tank from sanding. This is totaly up to you, and the r.p.m your buffing tool cuts at. If your using a 2700 r.p.m you'll have to repeat this step. After the tank looks like the scratches from the sanding are removed go over the tank with just rouge and the buffing wheel. To finish your work you can buff with green and white rouge with the white buffing wheel. I'll leave this choice up to you. Some times I'll go the extra step on show trucks. After buffing the tank you"ll need to polish all areas that were not polished by machine, Use either #0000 steel wool, rubbing compound, or Magic Mix. Any combonation of these three work fine. Then finish the rubbing with Magic Mix (only) to get the best finish.
