THE RAINBOW MOM
"BUILDING BRIDGES"
Hello, PFLAG Family! On Martin Luther Kind Day, I had the opportunity to attend a most inspirational event in Detroit. My two sons and our secretary, Chuck, accompanied me. After a sandwich at the Cass Cafe, we walked in the brutal cold air to the lovely old First Congregational Church to witness an historic event: PFLAG Family Reunion, a Detroit chapter for people of color, sponsored a celebration in honor of Doctor King and in honor of all the gay/lesbian/bisexual/transgendered people, black and white, who have joined in the struggle for equality for ALL people. Some of our PFLAG national leadership were there, including Executive director David Tseng and National President Sam Thoron. Six PFLAG chapters were represented. Keynote speaker was Hester Wheeler, executive director of the NAACP. It was an evening of faith and affirmation, prayer, gospel singing, oratory, and artwork proclaiming hope that we CAN work together, that someday this will be a land with "liberty and justice for all".
We have the need and the opportunity to continue this journey here in Jackson. We need to connect with communities of color, and faith communities, and bridge the gaps which divide us. On May 3, we will be hosting the Michigan Circle. This event will bring all of the state's chapters together. Our board has chosen "Building Bridges" as our theme. We will feature speakers, a panel and films that address issues of faith and color, and we will meet to decide how our chapters can do a better job of connecting with these communities. We are obviously excited about this event, and we'd love to have your help! We will be firming up the program and sending a registration form soon. Stay tuned, and please join us!
Sincerely,
Lorraine, The Rainbow Mom!
