Join the JCC GSA at downtown Jackson's coolest location for a series of informative and enlightening films. Each year the JCC GSA puts together a series of films designed to educate the viewer regarding LGBT issues. Some of the films are documentary, some drama, some comedies, but they all share the same thread of working to promote tolerance and education. The focus of this year's series is the documentary, and how the spectrum of Gay life is represented through the camera lens. The films will start at 6:00 p.m at the Thunderbird, 129 E. Harvey Fierstein narrates this documentary by Rob Epstein about San Francisco's most colorful -- and unfortunately, tragic -- political figure: Harvey Milk. A staunch fighter for gay rights, Milk helped forge a presence for the city's gay community in city hall, becoming the first openly gay member of San Francisco's combative city council. After Stonewall, Sunday, May 15th, 6:00 p.m.
Melissa Etheridge narrates this documentary that explores the progress and challenges of the post-Stonewall lesbian/gay rights movement through archival footage and interviews with leaders such as Barbara Gittings, Armistead Maupin, Jewelle Gomez and Dorothy Allison. The film chronicles key events from 1970 to the end of the 20th century, including sexual liberation, conflicts with the feminist movement, AIDS and political organization.
