Follow after Charity, and desire Spiritual Gifts!
Have you ever wondered about if you had a Spiritual gift, what they are like, and how to operate in them?
First lets ask a few questions:
If you read John 3:16 would you believe it was written only to the disciples, or is it in third person (...whosoever beleiveth...) written to you personally? Do you find this personalization of other sciptures meaningful? Do you get excited when you find other scriptures that apply to you? Do you know people who have for one reason or another rejected a revelation of the scriptures that seems to be a common standard in Christianity? Do you know people that have shared revelations with you that you were not able to readily "personalize" till you searched what the Bible actually said about the subject for, or against it? At this time I would point out that God gives you a free will and you are not a robot, but an individual who makes decisions that affect the direction in your life, and which you are held responsible for. Warning : Spiritual gifts may not be accepted in your denomination and you having a gift of the Holy Spirit may not make you popular in your congregation, if this is a concern for you leave now!
The word "grace" in the greek "charis" means "gift". If you have recieved Christ you are a "gifted" person. I Cor. 12:7 says "But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal" so every believer that brings forth a gift profits everyone who is able to receive from that person . Verse eight goes on to tell about the gifts, and the chapter tells about the individuals, gift offices, the setting for the individuals to operate properly in their gift, then it talks about excellence referring to chapter thirteen. Chapter thirteen reveals God's heart of love, getting his heart qualifies one for his ability, and authority for his "manifestation of the Spirit". Chapter fourteen begins and ends with a commandment, which he, Paul does in the name of the Lord even with husbands and wives (verses 34,35 as concerning wives speaking in church, and rather asking their husbands at home, women=wives as used here, and is not to limit women from lawfully speaking in the church, as in Philippians 4:3, II Timothy 4:19) as the Apostle he lines out the order of God for the gifts to operate orderly, and profitably. I Corinthians 14:14 says "For if I pray in an unknown tongue, my spirit prayeth, but my understanding is unfruitful" a unfruitful understanding means your natural mind doesn't know how the sylable sounds, you are speaking relate in a earthly setting. Verse 28 says "But if there be no interpreter, let him keep silence in the church; and let him speak to himself, and to God" so there is a tongue between yourself and God, and there is a tongue to be interpreted, if there is a interpreter present. But where do interpreters come from? Verse 13 says "Wherefore let him that speaketh in an unknown tongue pray that he may interpret", not translate (though it may have a foriegn translation as in Acts 2), interpret, which verse 5 says is equal to prophesy. (I would that ye all spake with tongues but rather that ye prophesied: for greater is he that prophesieth than he that speaketh with tongues, except he interpret, that the church may receive edifying.)
Lets stop a minute, there are plenty of good reasons not to do these commandments. ( v. 37 If any man think himself to be a prophet, or spiritual, let him acknowledge that the things that I write unto you are the commandments of the Lord), but if you know there is simply an order to observe you can freely flow in these things by faith, and be discipled by Christ through Paul the Apostle. After Jesus breathed on the disciples saying receive the Holy Spirit in John 20:21-23 and the disciples were saved, then in Acts 1:4,5 he says wait for the Holy Spirit to come "upon" them, and that he was the "baptiser in the Holy Spirit"...you have heard of me" and Apostle Peter says in Acts 2:17 says "And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams".
If you believe Jesus is the Baptiser in the Holy Spirit, and want him to baptise you in the Holy Spirit, with evidence of speaking in tongues, then pray like Luke 11:9,10 says:
9 And I say unto you, Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you.
10 For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.
Pray, then speak the sounds he impresses you to speak by faith. James 2:17,18 says "17 Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone.
18 Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works."
So you need to speak, and it is not your native tongue.
Personalize the vision, like Acts 2:17 says, and "Let all things be done decent and in order", but let all things be done! Regarding praying and speaking in tongues, if you have questions don't talk to someone who is ignorant of the sciptures, or doesn't want you to move in Spiritual gifts.
