'The People's Preacher'
"The People's Preacher"
"Wise County's Billy Graham"
IN LOVING MEMORY
of my Friend
Rev.Blaine Howington
(Aug 13, 1940 - Feb 18,1999)
Rev.Howington was known as "the people's preacher" because his ministry involved visitation to local hospitals, nursing homes, jails, flea markets and other places. For over 25 yrs Blaine walked his way through the region spreading the word of God. You would always see Blaine walking, because he couldn't drive. You would see him with a suit and tie and cowbody hat and his bible under his arm.
Going to share a word with someone or pray for the sick... Everybody in Wise County knew him, he had his own brand of ministry making daily visits to the area hospital's and nursing homes. Preacher Blaine would spend his days preaching throughout the county and then every night he'd attend various churches for revival.
Rev.Darrell Bolling Blaine's pastor said " There's not a car in Wise County that's got as many miles on it as he has" "He's probably the best know person in Wise County". But in November of 1998 Blaine suffered a stroke, and never able to overcome the stroke he stepped onto the streets of gold on February 18,1999. I would like to share with you the last part of a poem written by Pastor Tim Collins which he read at Blaine "HOMECOMING"
He fought with all his faith, a stroke, pneumonia and a heart attack, And as the bell did ring, and the angels did sing,
Jesus, help!! He's pinned in the final round.
The Devil looked around, but Blaine was nowhere to be found.
And from Heaven came a wonderful sound,
Blaine stands bold, as he declares from the streets of gold,
Hey Devil!! You can't keep a good man down!
