HTML Practice for Career Vision

A good site to visit: World Wide Web Consortium.  The official site.
Pat Whalen's Home Page

This section of my Web site is dedicated to a good friend whose initials are H.M.A. We have a standing joke that the initials HTML should really be HMA.

Beginning today, April 21, 2003, I'll be using this page as HTML practice. I am enrolled as a student at Career Vision, a computer school where I'm learning HTML. Before leaving on my two-hour train ride, I'll have some time to do the exercises in my textbook. If you are interested in creating your own Web site, you may want to right-click on the screen and then click "View Source" to peek behind the curtain,

For my first exercise, I'll create the beginning of an HTML form.

Please do not enter text here; a script residing on the server is needed. My guestbook, however, is accessible from my main page.

Now I'll try to create radio buttons. Pretend that I am asking, "What would you most like to see added to this site?"

Chess     Math   Programming   Running

Now I'll make a select list. Even if you are new to HTML, you will probably recognize it:

Before trying my hand at an HTML table, I'll make an ordered list. The letter to my friend, dated 4/20/2003, will serve as material.
In high school I was not a good player on the baseball team, but I was quite a good scorekeeper. Now that my preparation for Tuesday's HTML test (I mean HMA test) is winding down, it is time to look at the scorecard and to resume long-range projects.

Scorecard (April 20, 2003)
  1. Amazon.com Sales Rank: 1,983,124. Goal: Overtake Valley of the Dolls.
  2. Barnes & Noble Sales Rank: 577,538. Goal: Same as above.
  3. Hit Count, Patrick and Debbie's Think Tank: 83.
  4. Hit Count, Patrick Whalen's Books, Chess, and Projects: 1,367.

Saddam Hussein as Role Model Goal: Suitcases of $100 bills that no one will know about. Before enrolling in Ph.D. program.
H.M.A. wrote, "Sounds like a plan, man."

By now you may have heard that the U.S. soldiers found (in buildings near the palaces) boxes of US $100 bills totaling $700,000,000. (The figure may be higher before you read these lines.) Each box had about $4,000,000 worth of currency. The money, of course, is in custody; maybe the President will give it to American CEO's as tax relief. I can think of many ways that you and I could use the money to stimulate the American economy.

Battle Plan No. 6 is not so far fetched as it sounds (if you practice positive thinking). If I redeem $3.00 worth of deposits from soda cans, then put three one-dollar bets on 186 (my favorite three-digit number is the daily lottery), I'll win $1,500 in cash, tax free. Remember that in NY State, the winnings from a lottery ticket can be taxed only if the ticket is worth more than $600. If the winnings are on separate tickets, I'll have three tickets worth $500 each. No claim form is required.

Possible Backup Plan: Master's Title in Chess.
