Patrick Whalen's Books, Chess, Projects

Recovery from my illness has been slow, but I'll soon be playing in a chess tournament again.

For Returning Visitors: Updates for July 4, 2009.

I) Home from the Hospital. The Lyme Disease was not the worst of my troubles. Near the end of April, I returned home after 23 days in the hospital, where I was diagnosed with non-Hodgkins lymphoma. The bad news is that it's a form of cancer. The good news is that the doctor describes it as "eminently treatable and potentially curable." For someone in my situation, I have probably done as well as anybody could. I have also finished the last of my six chemotherapy sessions.
II) Back to Chess. In June I participated in a tournament at Marist College. The result was somewhat of a disappointment, and I am unsure whether it was due mainly to rust or to my illness. On July 13 I'll begin playing in another tournament. When I am feeling better (another three months?), I hope to have my chess games on my site. Meanwhile, the board on the bottom of this page is the chess puzzle of the day.

For New Visitors:

Greetings to all my friends and readers, and to anyone interested in programming, running, and chess. I am 56 years old and have an M.A. in English from Fordham University. Six years ago I began writing nonfiction when I learned that my employer was about to go out of business. I worked at a child welfare agency in Manhattan for 20 years.

I have taught myself enough C to say that I am no longer a beginner. I hope to resume study of it in September, 2008.

Brain Bombardment: Six Years in Print

My first book--Brain Bombardment: A Runner's Diary--is being sold at my publisher's on-line bookstore. (See link near bottom of page.) My book explores the usefulness of running as part of an all-around program of mental conditioning. It has some funny stories about life at my former office. Call (866) 229-9244 toll free to order.

Because of my return to chess,I have temporarily scaled back my long-term independent study for an eventual Ph.D., probably in mathematics. To strengthen my application in later years, I may still write my algebra book.

Do hard times prevent you from going abroad on your vacation? Buy my book. It is cheaper than a plane ticket, you won't be hijacked, and I can't make you take off your shoes. If you enjoy reading diaries, you will especially enjoy Brain Bombardment.

Chess Book in Print

Chess masters agree that it is important to study and annotate your games. A former world champion even recommended publishing your games, but only the masters can do that. Right?
Wrong! Write Your Own Chess Book, Regardless of Your Strength will show how you can do it too. If you have a computer chess program you can trust, you can write a chess book. Are you a beginner? You can publish your club’s history and the games from its annual championships.

Learn by writing. The author scored two draws (included in the book) against masters who outrated him by 600 points. Now it is your turn. To read an excerpt, click on Pat Whalen's Chess Page in the list of links. To order the book itself, go to my chess book publisher.

Martha Stewart Project Finally Resumes. I call it the Martha Stewart Project because Martha is my role model for web sites. The project resumed on August 12, 2008, and will include the expansion (long overdue) of Patrick and Debbie's Think Tank. Some new material will be there, probably beginning in late January of this year. As for this Webspawner site, I'll keep it alive to make announcements, tell stories, and let viewers sign my guestbook. My think tank will be the more serious of the two sites.

Proving It. I have begun learning how to do a Math Proof.

A few years ago, I searched on Amazon.com and bought a beautiful hardcover of HTML4 Unleashed. It was originally $60.00, but I bought a copy for under $2.00, plus shipping and handling. Good luck.

The following brief game is from a recent tournament of mine. (I had Black.) I hope, before long, to have you play through more of my games.
