The Rocky Road to Riches Life in Tokyo was not supposed to be like this. It was plain bad luck to have arrived in Japan just after the good times had ended and just as another painful recession – the most recent one in an exhausting series of economic dips that stretched all the way back to the early 90s – was sneaking in via the back door. Thinking about this for the nth time as he rode the subway home, and with nothing else to look forward to but another instant cup noodle dinner in front of the television, Peter Jameson could not help feeling depressed. Coming to Japan had been a fluke – the result of accidental eavesdropping. Over lunch at a Detroit diner one day after yet another unsuccessful job interview, he had overheard four hippie-looking men discussing the easy money to be had in Tokyo if you were blonde and blue-eyed. The Japanese were crazy about Westerners, one of the men who had actually been to Japan – an artist-type with his hair in a messy ponytail and scars from a botched-up nose ring job still evident – had claimed. Apparently, there were countless easy high-paying jobs to be had for foreigners who were willing to appear on TV or to teach English. "As long as you talk and look like an American, you can basically walk into any language school and instantly get a job that pays at least $40 an hour," this man went on.
