CARING FOR ORPHANED CHILDREN IN INDIA
AIMS AND OBJECTIVES OF THE INSTITUTION - NETAJI MEMORIAL ORPHANS RESIDENTIAL SCHOOL
P.O. GHAGHRA, GUMLA DISTRICT, BIHAR, INDIA - 835208
This institution, Netaji Memorial Orphans Residential School, was started in the golden dawn of the year 1986, aiming at total literacy among the poor and down-trodden people and children living in near and far-distant villages, rendering socio-cultural services by cooperating economically, informing of educational activities for parentless children and providing medical facilities to the needy people. In this area, people are uneducated and hence indulge in only drinking locally made wine, rice beer (Hanriya) among adivasis (aboriginal) of Chotanagpur and belief in Ojha, tona or witchcraft etc..
Often a struggle and tussle takes place among them because of a misunderstanding and very poor knowledge of medical science and its development. Because of a big gap in thinking and doing, this kind of an institution was needed and, as a result of it, children began to grow up and so influenced the people in all walks of life with constant labour and cooperation of the institution's staff, in spite of a lot of problems and obstacles in its way.
Because of the institution's activities, the people began to grow in an awareness of their movement and gradually started to bring about a change in their outlook. The institution's inspiration and encouragement has shown good progress and, as a result, the institution was itself encouraged and aimed at uprooting poverty, first by giving shelter, education and a guarantee of a different way of life for orphans and poor children. Now, the institution has plans to accelerate the uprooting of illiteracy and to bring about a broad outlook of 360 degrees.
Our institution was started with a very small number of orphans and poor children as the foundation of humanitarian future plan which is at present the children have increased in number to over 400, excluding other needy and poor children sheltered in the institution.
Netaji Orphanage and school, situated at Ghaghra, Gumla District, Bihar - 835208 (India) is actually situated in the middle of Chotanagpur plateau, like a small but fast-growing child with all-round development, e.g. physical, mental, intellectual with maximum happy blending between socio-cultural adjustment and development. The place, Ghaghra, is surrounded by thick, green forest in the hills and mountains from the bottom to the top and flowing small and big rivers which never affect the peaceful life of the people living in the villages and small towns situated on the banks or edges of the rivers as it flows from high land to lower lands forming deep valleys ("Ghagh").
Ranchi is the main city of Chotanagpur which falls within a distance of maximum 100 kilometres from Ghaghra, the place of the school and orphanage. Except for those living in Ranchi, the people of the entire local surroundings - near and far - places live in houses made of mud and tiles. Our institution is made of brick walls and tiles roofs due to not strong economy. The buildings are constructed in a line and angle that makes it convenient for rendering education and other services. The classes run separately in one line of class rooms. Shelter and accommodation for the poor and orphans are separate which looks charming in glancing from the corners of both the sides of the field, in the middle kitchen-garden (for vegetables) has covered the place and other parts are covered with a garden of different plants and flowering trees, sugarcane, banana, mango and rubber trees. Another big piece of land is used as a playground, parade ground and for open assembly where, from time to time, cultural programs also are performed.
In the campus of the institution there is a place for medical check-up with free treatment for the poor, orphans and other needy children and their guardians, including management staff as there is insufficient accommodation for large scale medical facilities due to lack of needful assistance or funding, though there is a big scope for medical and other humanitarians activities to render the best services to even the people of distant places.
The institution has about one hectare of land including engaged portion (constructed part) for educational purposes, living-in orphans' hostel, but according to future plan of development it is insufficient in view of the progress of the children of high level patriotic outlook with true humanitarian attitude. Ours is an institution of humanitarian activities to create real and true men and women with maximum objective adjustment by which, in future, the children may have the capacity to overcome all problems and hindrances on the way to their highest goal of life by their dashing and dynamic personalities, having strong shoulders and wrists like steel to lift all who lag behind.
