ROSS FAMILY FARM

These eggs are from true “free range” chickens. They are not caged at any time, but are free to wander about the property at will. They are able to eat grass, weeds, insects and an occasional earthworm. The chickens live in an old school bus at night which protects them from their natural predators. Chickens naturally roost together in tree limbs at night to protect themselves from predators. We have installed a system of Fir tree limbs & lumber in the bus for them to roost on. This gives them the nice naturally round varied dimensions that is comfortable for them.

The “electric school bus” also contains all of their nests. Our chickens nest boxes are approximately 12” by 18” which just happens to be about the same dimensions that are used by some large egg factories as cages for their birds. Our birds don’t spend their lives in boxes, they only go there to lay eggs. In fact our nests are so spacious that sometimes two hens will use the same nest at the same time!! (Chickens are creatures of habit and prefer to lay in the same box everyday.)

During the daylight hours our hens, (and a few roosters,) ramble about the property. They spend their time dusting themselves in the dirt and foraging in the woods and meadows. They have no restraints and freely roam over several acres. Much of their time is spent “dusting”. This activity seems to be a chickens idea of fun. They dig small holes in soft earth and then throw the earth up over themselves. It looks a little bit like taking a dirt bath. Typically they get up at day break roam out to a favorite meadow, (the early bird gets the worm,) then come back to the chicken bus to check out friends and socialize, then off to another meadow for a while. Most of the hens lay in the early forenoon but some wait until after noon to lay their eggs.

Because the chickens are so far out in the woods we only check on them once a day when we check their grain and water. Our birds always have a supply of fresh grains on hand. We do not allow our layers to eat processed chicken feed that contains animal byproducts or added chemicals.
