JACK’S CORNER:
2002 REUNION INVITATION:
The OCS 57-C Reunion Committee met in Las Vegas 1-4 April 2001, launching plans for a reunion to be held at the Gold Coast Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada Sunday-Thursday, 7-11 April 2002. All members, spouses and guests of OCS classes 57-B, 57-C and 57-D are invited to attend this important event, sanctioned by vote at our April 2000 reunion in Laughlin, Nevada.
Committee members are: Dennis Goudy, registration; Milt Jones, golf; Frank Walls, Gold Coast liaison; Dave Harvey, memoriam display/secretary; Phil Meek, finance; Bob Sims, photography; Gil Whiteman, banquet MC and Nellis tour and Jack Fox, chairman. Our first planning meeting coincided with a small gathering of 57-C members, wives and guests and provided a preview of what to expect next year. Las Vegas and the Gold Coast were selected as the locale and hotel primarily because of the proximity to the majority of the committee volunteers, outstanding facilities at reasonable cost and pleasant April climate.
The main hotel and casino, located at 4000 West Flamingo Road, was built in 1986. Major renovations followed and some are still in work, bringing the complex to 750 rooms, 72 bowling lanes, five restaurants, two live show lounges, complimentary fitness center, RV parking, 700 seat bingo parlor, heated outdoor pool, banquet facilities, large dance hall and free shuttle to the strip, less than a mile east on Flamingo Road. Rooms are average size, newly carpeted and tastefully decorated - an excellent value for under
$50.00. The hotel is ideally located and provides a quieter, more relaxed atmosphere than the congested strip. Covered, open and valet parking is provided. If you haven’t reserved your rooms yet at the Gold Coast, now is the time to do it. Even if you have not yet registered with Dennis there is no cost to set up the room reservations. Just call, toll free, 888-402-6278 and use the code “AF OCS 1957 REUNION 2002” to get the $45.00 per night special rate. As of 11 August 59 people have been registered to come with more on the reservations rolls.
ENTERTAINMENT AND REUNION ACTIVITIES:
We expect the USAF Thunderbird Museum tour at Nellis AFB to be a very huge highlight of this reunion and is arranged for us to be an exclusive tour as arranged for us by our revered Veep. The banquet is already set, and the speaker arranged for. The floor show arrangements will be announced in a later newsletter and there is more…Just a teaser now but let it be known that a couple of surprises are in store for you. They will be revealed when you sign in at our registration on April 7th…but they are NEAT!
WHAT TO WEAR:
Las Vegas is dry and sunny during early April with daytime temperatures typically in the seventies with humidity under 10 percent. Expect nights to be in the fifties - a sweater or light jacket will suffice. Attire for the week will be casual - coat and tie are not required for the banquet, however, we expect all in attendance to reflect our customary high dress standards.
TRANSPORTATION:
McCarran International Airport is five miles from the Gold Coast. Cab fare is $12-$16 for up to four persons. A less convenient shuttle is available for $6.00 per person. A rental car is not required for reunion activities and a free shuttle loops to the strip on a twenty minute schedule. Transportation for Nellis events will be provided by bus or ride sharing. An information bulletin board will be located in the hospitality suite, open at 10:00 AM daily, for information on ride sharing, time changes, room numbers, messages, etc.

I recently received a letter from Denise Ellis, wife of Class 57B 4th Squadron’s Bill Ellis, with news that Bill has been moved to a nursing facility due to his advanced Parkinson’s disease condition. Bill is particularly interested in hearing about OCS matters and would greatly appreciate hearing from his classmates, especially those who remember him as a member of 4th Squadron. WHITEMAN’S WRITINGS:
Greetings, Classmates!
One exciting aspect of our 2002 reunion in Las Vegas, will be a dedicated tour of the USAF Ariel Demonstration Squadron (Thunderbird) Museum at Nellis Air Force Base. Rather than putting us in with the general civilian tour group in the afternoon, we have arranged with the Thunderbird Public Affairs Office to have a dedicated tour for our registrants alone. Since our anticipated number may well exceed the tour maximum of 105, we will have two groups (take your choice of groups at sign-in) Group A will tour from 0900 to 1030 and Group B will tour from 1030 to 1200, on Tuesday, April 9, 2002. Let Dennios Goudy know of your desired group when you submit your registration form. At this point we are not sure whether we will double-up riding in personal cars or have rented busses for the two separate groups. If it is the latter we shall absorb the cost from our treasury, and as such will not increase your registration fees.
We do have a tentative schedule or itinerary for the event and it is as follows:
Sunday April 7…….Registration all day, Hospitality room open…..evening is open
Monday April 8…….AM a golf tournament assuming Milt Jones can arrange it at Nellis AFB as the only comfortable schedule time
All attendees may have a pay-as-you-go breakfast together otherwise the morning and afternoon schedule is
Open. This evening may be the best time to offer te optional evening floor show at the Gold Coast news on that
later.
Tuesday April 9…..Thunderbird Museum Tour in 2 groups at Nellis AFB with a lunch at the O Club afterwards, going Dutch as it were
Afternoon and evening schedule open.
Wednesday April 10……Morning schedule is open…The banquet room will be available to us from 1200 to 1500 for class meetings and
such, the full schedule to be announced later. Class pictures will also be scheduled during this afternoon and be
taken by Bob Sims. No bleachers are available so we may have to do things a bit differently from the Laughlin
experience. The room must be evacuated by 1500 for the Banquet which starts at 1800.
Thursday April 11..How about a goodbye breakfast together??? A few will be hanging around for a while but general scattering will
be the normal activity.
Yours in Brotherhood,
Gil Whiteman

The planning work for this reunion has been rather extensive, as has other detail work to include the previously referred to surprises. Part of the work is mine in the production of the new class register. I will have 30 copies there with me and they will be sold (the price not yet established) to the first comers. Included in each one will be a CDR which has upon it the entire document in both B&W and Color so those of you who want to have it in your computer or to print your own copy may do so.
I am including as an attachment to this newsletter a complete and up-to-date class address listing which includes snail, e, phone, fax, and other information as needed.
I am saddened to add at this juncture that we were recently informed by Ronald Bloese of Chicago, Illinois, that Marjorie J. Bloese, fellow classmate, is “Deceased” as of 10-07-00. This information is reflected in all pertinent records of this and all future documents.
I would like to bring it to everyone’s attention that a certificate of Cold War Recognition is available to all of us. To obtain the recognition that the Congress has prescribed with this document we must have served in either military or civilian service with the War, Navy, or Defense Department at some time between September 2, 1945 and December 26, 1991 ( I do believe at least most of us completed an entire career in there) Requests can be made on-line with a year allowed for follow-up documentation by snail, fax or email. Documentation is necessary but original documents are frowned upon. Copies are good enough. DD 214, Discharge, SO’s, whatever is fine. Here are the addresses: Cold War Recognition, 4035 Ridge Top Road, Suite 400, Fairfax, VA 22030; Email: cwrs@fairfax-emh1.army.mil Fax : 703-275-6749 and online: http://coldwar.army.mil
That is about it for me…hope to see you soon in Vegas and please do check out our great new website at http://www.webspawner.com/users/ocsclass57c.html/ and then tell Dick Nagel, the CINCWEB, how much you like it on the guest book page, never hurts to stroke the CINCWEB you know.

MILT’S BITS TOO:
A Golf Tournament will be held at the upcoming reunion at Nellis AFB Golf Course on Monday morning, 08 April 2002.
1) There will be a $5 prize fee charged to each player who wishes to enter the "Honey Pot". Each team will consist of two players and they will play a three part game. Each team will be selected by blind drawing. Handicaps will not apply. Mulligan chits can be bought which will allows the person who owns them to take a mulligan, per chit, any time any place on the course. Each player can move his or her ball 36" (the length of a wedge shaft) any time any where on the course except on the green and the tee box. Prizes will be given for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place finishers. In addition prizes will be given for closest to the pin on two par three holes.
a) The first part of the game will be a two person scramble (both people hit the next ball from the location of the best first shot made previously by a member of that team on that hole). This procedure will be followed until the ball is holed out on that hole.
b) The second part will be alternating shots. One partner will tee off and the other partner will hit the next shot from the spot where the previous shot landed and so on to hole out. The person who holes out cannot hit the next tee shot, each partner alternates shots in every case. One ball is used per team for this game.
c) The third part will be to count the team's lowest single ball score. Each person will play their own ball and who ever scores the lowest number of shots on each hole will have their score recorded as the team score.
2) We will be selling "Mulligan" chits at $2 each or three for $5. There is a 3 chit limit per player. The revenue collected from this will be added to the 1st, 2d and 3rd place team prizes.
3) We will also be selling "Calcutta" chances for $5 each. When you buy one you buy a chance on the team that you choose will win. You can buy a ticket on your own team or another. The people who own tickets on the lowest scoring team will split the "Calcutta" pot.
Golf outing agenda:
0600-0730 Breakfast at Nellis Course
0600-0720 Pairing, discussion of games, assignment of tee times, sales of Mulligan chits and Calcutta bets.
0730 First tee time, hand out of (tee) gifts, each tee time will follow until all teams have teed off. The Golf Outing director and
his partner will tee off last.
Each person will be responsible for paying for their own green fees. At the present time O-4s are charged $28 for 18 holes and a cart. This may vary slightly in the interim period. At this time the total fee if a person bought green fees and a cart, three chits and a "Calcutta" chance would be $43.
