Officer Candidate School Class 57C May 2000 Newsletter
President-Jack Fox Vice President-Gil Whiteman Treasurer-Phil Meek Secretary-Dave Harvey
REUNION 2000 REPORTS:
The O.C.S. Class 57-C Reunion 2000 at Laughlin, Nevada, was the week of April 16 to 21 of 2000 and was celebrated and attended by a total of 130 classmembers and their guests. All reports thus far received from attendees have been positive in nature. On April 18, 2000 at a class meeting in the Banquet Room of The Laughlin Harrah’s Hotel, the following officers were installed after votes by the attending classmates:
President…………….….John F.C. (Jack) Fox
Vice President………….Gilbert L. (Gil) Whiteman
Treasurer/Secretary……Forrest P. (Phil) Meek
The class then unanimously appointed that board of officers with the duty of further appointing members to committee a second reunion during 2002 at a place and time to be selected by that committee. It was also strongly indicated that formality of organization be of low priority and that our organization remain as informal yet as well served as has been our historical record thus far. Following that first meeting the offices of Secretary and Treasurer have been separated into two distinctly different jobs. Phil Meek will continue to serve as the Treasurer but the job of Secretary for the class (and as Class Historian) will be:
Secretary………………..David C. (Dave) Harvey
The private opinion of myself, the secretary, is that the first Reunion of the Class of 57-C was a tremendous success and that all who attended were happy to have arranged their schedules to accommodate it. Future reunions will be scheduled but may not ever achieve the feelings attained at this the first for forty-three years.WORDS FROM OUR NEW PRESIDENT:
Dear 57-C classmates, The 2000 Reunion is history but the 57-C story will continue on until the last OC turns out the lights. At a meeting held 18 April at Harrah's Laughlin, those in attendance from our class decided to form an alumni association with dues to be paid annually on 20 September, a renowned day for our class. The members present elected yours truly to lead the association, Gil Whiteman was elected vice president and Phil Meek was chosen Secretary/Treasurer. We subsequently split the secretary /treasurer position and named Dave Harvey as secretary and historian. Dave has been working long and hard in this capacity since last summer and we are fortunate to have him continue with the biographical sketch project in addition to regular secretarial and historical duties. Dave is preparing a reunion report and Milt Jones is making a video for dissemination - both will be available soon. Dick Nagel has taken on the job of advising and designing a class 57 C web-page that should be available to all very soon.
The first order of business will be for all who wish to join the association to send a $10.00 check to Phil. Your dues will entitle you to updated rosters, a newsletter (written and posted monthly on the 20th of each month) and information and rosters provided by other Officer Candidate associations which agree to reciprocal dissemination of alumni data. A portion of dues will be used for reunion start-up expenses. The association's purpose is to promote the fellowship which began in March 1957, and which remains as strong as ever to this day. This we will do by holding reunions and disseminating information of interest to all members of 57-C. We presently plan to host reunions every other year, the next one scheduled for the central U.S. in 2002, at a date and site to be named later. Reunion planning committees will be formed soon, one each for the Western, Central and Eastern areas. The Western area is loosely defined as the area west of the Rocky Mountains, the Central area encompasses the area from the Rockies to the Mississippi River, and the Eastern area is the remainder stretching to the Atlantic Ocean.
We welcome your suggestions and comments for making this a viable organization. Your elected council is dedicated to keeping us together, never to drift apart again. Your membership begins with a $10.00 check, either made out to Phil Meek, or made out to OCS Class 57, and send it on to Phil Meek at 1319 East Palo Verde Drive, Phoenix, AZ 85104. That check will entitle you to full membership and privileges until September 20, 2001
Respectfully, Jack Fox
STATISTICS OF THE REUNION IN LAUGHLIN :
A total of 130 people attended the 2000 reunion in Laughlin, Nevada of which 43 were from 57B, 75 were from 57C, and 12 from 57D. A total of 73 were OC’s and the rest spouses or guests. Many were involved in the varying golf tourneys held there and the winners were: Bob Cataldi, Jack Fox, Jim Fosse, Larry McLean, Paul Parton, Jim Levering, Reg Strickland, Al McNeal, Lowell Cooke, Milt Jones, Jerry Strickland, Bill Weimer, Ed Berg, Bob Lee, Ben Larsen, Jorgy Jorgenson, Pat Barnt, and George Thacher. I am not revealing what each one was the winner of, because, well, who really cares? They are all winners!!!
Many attendees had the additional experience of “sand-bar navigation” or maybe it would better be called “mis-navigation” on a side trip to Lake Havasu, Arizona. Not all of us were as lucky as they were…they actually got to see some First Class walking on water !! (or was that IN water ???) Others found “Gold” in them thar hills near Oatman, Jean Harvey was one, for example, but her “mother-lode” was really only visible by blacklight and microscope.
Photographs were taken at all venues and are available for order from Jorgy Jorgenson. Many can be seen on the new Class 57C web-page which has been established and managed by our fellow classmate, Dick Nagel. See it at: http://www.webspawner.com/users/ocsclass57c/index.html Once you’ve found it, set it as one of your “favorites” for quick reference. Much of what will be on those pages will be downloadable and it will be kept current and is updateable.
SPECIAL NEWS AND NOTICES :
Nancy Stedman, Bob Keen, and Gerry Killen have been heard from and information has been sent as they have asked. Their best wishes are forwarded for the class along with their apologies for not being able to attend the reunion. Frank Walls is back from his recent sojourns in the wildlife areas to which he had been hired. He too wishes everyone well and expresses his regrets at missing the fun at Laughlin.
Recent reports indicate that Classmate Willis Hargrove is improving from his attack of blood bacteria and is back at his hobbies of entertaining webbrowsers and others with nothing to do but play e-mail games (like I do). (By the way, for those interested, Copies of the entire works have been made available on 3.5” floppies of everything he has sent…The secretary has them ready for you.) Leo Reilly is feeling better and wishing all his classmates well and wants everyone to know that he missed being with us in April but is gladdened by the support shown him in his recent battles. Jean Harvey is doing well and has completed the first series of cancer-fighting chemo-therapies and is about to embark on a second series of slightly more toxic chemicals. Bob Keen is also in need of our class concern as he fights prostate cancer. Ed Blevins is recuperating from throat cancer and is also fighting prostate cancer and is in need of our support as well. Phil Meek is in need of prayer support as he undergoes investigative medical help for a reported aneurysm in his head. We all hope that the process will prove totally curable and of no effect on his lifestyle.
Some copies of the Class 57C Register are still purchasable for $ 3.00 from Phil Meek and you can e-mail or write him for one. A copy of the Register, on a 3.5” diskette without pictures, or a CD, with pictures, is available for $3.00 from Dave Harvey. Just send a request by whatever means is at your disposal.
Work is being done to provide transcriptions of the meetings and speeches that were made at Laughlin in April. This is a long and very involved process and may take a while before we can send out copies. If you have an interest in having one please notify Dave, our Secretary. Work is also underway to provide videotaped recordings of those meetings and speeches for those interested. If you wish one please contact Jack Fox, our President
If any of you have information, corrections, comments, criticisms, updates, or profundities you wish to express, please contact us, your staff, or send to Secretary Dave for inclusion. The other things we must have is the autobiographical reports not already on file. Please tell us all about yourself….Respectfully Submitted
D.C. Harvey
