JACK'S CORNER: (JACK FOX)
Another reunion - another wonderful four days with classmates. I'm reminded of Jack Nicholson asking a waiting room of neurotics in a recent film if they ever considered that this may be as good as it gets. Art Burer's accounts of his prison experiences instilled in all of us what freedom really means. Dave Harvey's outstanding work on the 57-C Register and newsletter for the past two years and Karin Goudy's quilt project were singled out for special commendation. Can anyone doubt the talent, character and dedication of our members?
When asked what was the best thing about the reunion, Dick Edward's summed it up astutely with just two words: the people. All attendees probably agree 100 percent with Dick's assessment. Despite the fact that we had a wonderful time, there is no reason we can't make future events even more enjoyable. Because of the details involved, an early start will make our goals much easier to attain.
Since the reunion your executive committee has settled on keeping our major reunions on a biennial schedule. Thus we'll reunite in 2004. Where and when are yet to be determined and we would like to receive a proposal from midwest or eastern members. A committee will have wide latitude in developing the format, the primary requirements being ease of access and reasonable hotel costs. Just put us all together and we'll make it a memorable occasion.
Our class meeting revealed a strong interest in scheduling an ocean cruise; 2003 is preferred so as not to conflict with the 2004 reunion. A committee of Bill Weimer, Neil Sanders and John Ferris will investigate options, costs, sailing dates, etc. Specifics will be included in the September newsletter. Consensus at the class meeting was to limit the cruise to 4-5 days, regardless of locale.
With a regular reunion in 2004 and a cruise in 2003, we'll be providing options for all, realizing that some members aren't interested in cruises and are content with reuniting every other year. Further, those who wish to reunite on an annual basis will be buffered from the withdrawal symptoms which inevitably creep in with our present biennial schedule.
Due to wife Jeannie's health problems, Gil Whiteman has stepped down as vice president. Gil has contributed much to our association and we all owe him a debt of gratitude. Gil will continue to offer advice on putting on small, regional reunions. Dale Shipley has agreed take over the VP duties, knowing he can count on the full support of our members. I look forward to working with Dale - he brings outstanding administrative credentials to our committee.
In the OCS spirit,
Jack
DALE'S DRIVEL (DALE SHIPLEY)
Billl Weimer, John Ferris, and Neil Sanders have been out beating the bushes and collecting information about a possible cruise. Jack Fox collected some facts too. I hope to get this put together and then in the next newsletter I will put out a survey on: when, where to, what cruise line(s), what departure port, how long, etc. Also, I will try to have some ballpark figures on costs.
Another tidbit. You all know that the days of "free lunch" are history. Dick Nagel has advised that we may have to pay a modest monthly fee to get unlimited space for our Web site. We can and probably will handle it with association money.

DAVE'S DROOL: (DAVE HARVEY)
Unaccustomed as I am to writing anything of any importance other than what other people have said (can you detect the sound of sarcasm in there somewhere?) I simply must say how completely elated, happy, and enthused I felt when my child-bride and I attended Las Vegas a few weeks ago. The re-charged, re-juvenated, re-generated re-sult of being with all of our classmates is what keeps these old bones in animated form. My frequent visits to the website and the reunion pages keep the smiles and the happiness going. For that I thank everyone that attended, everyone that contributed, everyone that sent pictures, everyone that took part, and everyone that made this reunion of this class, and of my life's most rewarding memories, possible. Add to that my personal thanks to Dick Nagel for that website!!!
On top of all the praises being given we all, the entire class and
school, owe the family of Frank Walls an extreme "WELL DONE" Frank and
Janet were the one strong link that made it all happen and I personally
owe him lots for the work he did (and for the drinks I stole)
The new Class Register which made it's debut at the reunion is still available to anyone wanting a copy. It will cost $18.00 which includes the postage and handling charges. This price represents a virtual non-profit/non-loss situation for the class treasury.
One of our devoted and energetic classmates, Ace G. Hale by name, has graciously sent me his copy of the 57B Shavetail and I am Hi-Resolution Scan-Copying every single page of it. I want to do the same thing for a 57D book and would like to have a possible donator for that. Would anyone like to donate the use of a 57C book? Mine has been heavily written in and is not really copy-able. By the way, if you haven't looked at the web-site lately…DO IT NOW !!! Our CINC, Dick Nagel, has clearly outdone even his own magnificent self this time. In addition to the profuse photographic coverage of the reunion, he has thumb-nailed all the pix, and as they are selected a caption appears, then the enlargement is there to be looked at or downloaded as desired. In addition to this, a new page with links to other class pages and a section of the Shavetail is under construction. An award winning website if I am any judge (Which I should be…).
We all owe a very special debt of gratitude to a couple of very able and outstanding ladies. First, to our own Karin Younger-Goudy for the fabulous quilt which gave our organization quite a boost not only in morale but also in the association treasury. Second to the wife of our President, Bernice Fox, for the terrific job she did on presentation awards and the like. She has brightened many of our days with her artwork and concern for the class. I, for one, personally thank her for the award given to me there in Vegas.
While I am in the congratulatory mood, allow me to personally commend my good friend Gilbert Whiteman for the fantastic job he has done for this class, for this country, and for me personally these past few years. We can manage without you Gil, as the Pentagon did, but the hole you leave behind may well take a bunch of folk to fill !
As you all know by now, this is the first newsletter that has been sent to dues-paying members only, a decision made some time ago. It will still be available on the website though for those who have computer network access. This method is going to cost the treasury a bit more than before for postage, but since it is part and parcel of the dues it presents no problems at all. Any suggestions for improvement of the newsletter is welcome and will be implemented.
Please keep the following people in your personal thoughts, they are having a few problems and need our support a little more right now than ordinarily: Gil and Jeannie Whiteman, Tom and Barbara Gullick, Boyd Dailey, J.J. Mike Egan, Al Bettenhausen, and Ed and Mary Berg
There being space herein, and being a bit of an editor with a mission, let me add a bit more to this communications. I am sending some photographs taken directly from the Class 57B Shavetail which are of our second class flights…Alpha, Bravo, Coca, Delta, Echo, Foxtrot, and Yankee. I am hoping we can get them on the website and then let all you folk, and any others who can see them, help to name them. Many are no longer with us, and weren't when we became first-class either. Look for them and maybe we can enhance our historical information a bit.
I received a copy of the videos that were taken by Bernice Fox and Milt Jones at the reunion and by watching that for almost 4 hours I was again recharged by the reunion and again reenergized to get working on new projects. Right now it is the copying of the 57B Shavetail, soon I'll get on the trail of some of our less communicative classmates and then on to those we still need lots of information about. I never cease to be amazed at the never-ending energy that Jack Fox has in his role as chief coordinator. I also know that Bobby Sims is working madly trying to correct the color balance of the photo-shoot he did at the gathering. As you may remember the lighting and the room colors cast a rather unflattering pink-yellow haze all over the place. I know that digital corrections are a pain in the neck and maybe Bobby is too great of a critic, but that seems to be the delay which is being encountered with those photographs.

REGISTRAR'S RHETORIC: (DENNIS GOUDY)
At last report the weather in Tibet was wonderful but the monastery being attended won't allow communications, possibly because of the river excursion Dennis scheduled for the monks that went a bit awry…(as usual !) Prayerfully,
Dennis
