JACK’S CORNER: (JACK FOX)

When we held our initial organization meeting at the Laughlin reunion in 2000, there was little evidence as to where we were headed as a group. The most notable bright spot was the enthusiasm shown by classmates for pitching in and helping to get our association off to a good start. I recall thinking that publishing a newsletter and collecting biographical sketches would be a big task, one that I didn't want to take on at that time. Thankfully, Dave Harvey was delighted to take on the secretary/historian position. This proved to be crucial in communicating with members while scheduling and planning subsequent reunions, including two hosted by Gil Whiteman.

I haven't received Dave's files yet but expect it will be a rather large shipment. The newsletter and class register work were extremely important and, despite being enormous undertakings, Dave never missed a deadline, even those that were self-imposed. We were fortunate to have someone dedicated to such an overwhelming project and I hope one of our members will volunteer to assume the secretary's duties. Farewell to Dave, he served our association with distinction.

DALE’S Domain (DALE SHIPLEY)

This may apply to only a few of our classmates as most of us had service prior to when they changed the law to start reducing survivor benefits when the annuitant reaches age 62 and is eligible for social security benefit. According to the DFAS Retired Pay Newsletter, of December 2004
"Congress has approved legislation that - over a three and half year period - will eliminate the Social Security Offset reduction applied to the Survivor Benefit Plan (SBP) annuity. This will eliminate the annuity reduction from 55 percent to 35 percent when the annuitant reaches age 62. The reduction will be phased in through April 2008. Starting October 2005, affected annuitants whose annuity had been reduced to 35 percent will see their annuities increased to the 40 percent level. In April 2006, the annuities will be increased to 45 percent, in April 2007 they will increase to 50 percent, and in April 2008 they will be fully restored to the 55 percent level."
Retired members who were paying for the Supplemental SBP (SSBP) should have seen a corresponding decrease in their SBP costs as the elimination of the Social Security Offset reduction was phased in. The SSBP costs should have ceased effective Nov. 1, 2004.

The following is a repeat from our last Newsletter.

Sim's Smiles
If any of you have used my 2004 Reunion photo disk or have used it at Wal-Mart or the like, I would like some feedback on what successes or failures

I wonder how many attendees passed kudos to Bobby. I forgot to but did finally make a telephone call. The disk is really a great remembrance. My feeble excuse is that we didn't have decent DVD player.

Health Updates:

Jack Fox has had some prolonged problems the past year. In a recent email he said, "I'm getting back on my feet, pain is subsiding, and there's hope for more normal life in the near future. I'm going to stay out of doctor's offices as much as possible. "

In a phone conversation with Nan Burer on New Year's Day she reported that Art is still on his walker, not free of pain and does his daily therapy. True to Art's form he is in great spirits.

Locator Informaton:

Please, please keep your phone numbers and addresses up to date. Check the listing that came with this Newsletter for accuracy. While you're checking your data, check on anyone else you know and advise us of any omissions or needed corrections.

Finally:

Dennis Goudy has requested this be included in the newsletter:

"The Wounded Warrior Project seems to be an especially worthwhile and
appropriate organization that our classmates might be interested in
supporting. http://woundedwarriorproject.org"

The Association takes no position on the merits of the project. We suggest you talk to Dennis, visit their web site and make your own decision.

A tribute to the memory of Dave Harvey

Several classmates sent their memories of Dave:

From Phil Meek, "Dave Harvey was a Key member of our leadership team and a truly dedicated member of our association. He spent countless hours collecting biographies and other data and organizing all of it into the Class Register. His effort to make this fine publication serves as a lasting legacy to his surviving classmates. I particularly remember a personal visit Beth and I made with Dave and Jean in July when we stopped in Winter, Calif. on our return trip from Oregon. We had a delightful visit and meal together."

From Neil Sanders, "A memory of Dave Harvey that stands out for me happened about 0430 one morning.

Three or four weeks before our graduation, my wife, Donalee, joined me and we then shared an apartment with Dave and Cathy Ogilvie at Kelly AFB. Her arrival at the San Antonio airport was very early. It was a Saturday and I had arranged for that weekend off. I was up and ready early but at the parking lot, I could not locate my car. This is what happened. Blackie Blackwelder, having failed academically when we took our last series of tests, was unfortunately back in NCO status and asked to borrow my car while waiting for his assignment. I agreed on the condition he return the car the day before I would need it to pick up Donalee. We had a communication problem and Blackie was a day late. Well there I am in the parking lot and in big trouble. I knew Dave had a car, so I'm back in our building waking Dave and asking for his car. He was more asleep than awake and I don't think he fully understood why I needed the car but his keys were soon in my hand. That made my day and certainly averted Donalee's potential confusion followed by more severe negative feelings. Note: this would not be the first time I was late meeting her at an airport.

I asked Dave about this at our first reunion. He remembered and told me the car was special to him. I believe he had spent considerable time working on it. He said a big mistake was not keeping it and he missed having the car. And now, we miss having The Harv."

From Dennis Goudy, "I have fond memories of Dave. We used to correspond frequently, and I would call him Big Bunny (remember the movie Harvey?) I suspected some- thing was wrong when, the last few months, my messages to him elicited only a short response. As with Gil, I am missing our conversations.
He was an extremely enthusiastic and hard worker in our group creating and maintaining the Class Register as well as the Roster and Newsletters. He will be hard to replace. I hope he is with his beloved Jean again, and not where pilots usually go!
