After OCS, I went on to become one of the truly great Radar Intercept Officers and spent several years at various ADC bases. Finally, TAC got wind of how great I was and nabbed me to be a GIB in F-4s in Japan, Korea, and finally, Holloman AFB, NM. Having just returned from a remote tour and faced with much TDY in Europe, I decided that I had enjoyed all I could stand, and turned in my dog tags on August 1, 1972. Additionally, as I needed to establish some roots for my three teenage boys, I picked Tucson (which the boys really enjoyed) as a place for them to all graduate from the same high school. . Which they did!
A retired major's pay, however, did not adequately fund my new endeavor, so I was forced to go to work. I tried real estate sales for about a year, which satisfied the work part but only aggravated the funding problem. I finally went to work at a real job for the City of Tucson, and later, Pima County Wastewater Management Departments. I was a construction project manager when I retired in March 1993. I sure did learn a lot of stuff I didn't know about regarding sewers and garbage during those more than nineteen years. Dealing with contractors was a very enlightening experience, especially after having spent so much time in the USAF, where I could be completely confident about what I was being told by people with whom I dealt. Now I'm completely retired and doing what I enjoy most. Nothing! My wife, Eiko, and I do travel some, usually going to Japan for a month or so in April and October, to visit her folks.
I enjoyed the get-together in San Antonio, and hope we can work Laughlin into our schedule. Take Care.
