After working for TWA for a couple of years, and finding out there were no promotions to management for women, I decided to see if the Air Force was any different. I applied, tested, and was accepted for Officer Candidate School.

I blithely took off for San Antonio, not having the foggiest notion of what I was getting into. I was probably the worst and most unmilitary cadet OCS had ever seen. But, I was good at the academics -- until my reserve of nervous energy gave out and I started, during first class, to sleep through everything, including all the classes. I did do badly on one test, that I worried that I might wash back.

I was also planning on marrying a classmate, Dennis Goudy. When we got our assignments, they were about as far apart from each other as was possible. I checked with a couple of personnel officers that I knew at Randolph, and they said there wasn’t much chance of my being transferred to the same post or area as Dennis. That is what decided me to get out of the Air Force and return to civilian status.

It turned out that marrying Dennis was the best decision I could have made. We have been married for forty-two years now, and it looks as though it might last, despite the predictions of many people at that time. We have two children, Susan Goudy Epstein and David Goudy, both engineers and both residents of Colorado. Dennis and I have no grandchildren, which is a big regret, although we can’t do much about it. My cousin, however, has eleven, so I still have the fun of spending some time with young people. A friend and I also take trips to Europe with some of the local high school classes and those trips are lots of fun. The kids are great and everything is an adventure for them. And, they never complain.

Over the years, I went back and finished college and became a free lance writer and book indexer. I was also a museum director for several years. I quit writing a few years ago (except for book reviews) and have concentrated my time on quilting. I have always liked any kind of handwork, and became fascinated by quilting. Along that line, I have taught quilting classes and had one of my quilts featured in a national magazine.

In addition to quilting, gardening and reading, I walk three to five miles a day and I like to hike. My hiking group has hiked the Grand Canyon along the Kaibab and Bright Angel trails, and recently hiked into Supai canyon, also in the Grand Canyon. Arizona is great hiking country.

Hope to see you at the Laughlin April 2000 reunion.
