JACK’S CORNER: (JACK FOX)

Dale asked us all to share our big event of the summer. Bernice and I enjoyed a vacation that was beyond big. We spent three weeks on the road between home and North Dakota, with stops in Fort Collins and Denver, Colorado plus tours of Bryce Canyon (getting to be a yearly event) and the incredible Mesa Verde National Park. The drive to the summit of Mesa Verde is not for the squeamish but is well worth the effort. This area of southwestern Colorado is off the beaten path, which may explain why many Americans are not aware of its existence.

Our vacation was planned around fishing adventures in North Dakota at spots completely unknown as well as world famous, such as Devils Lake where walleye pike fishing rivals the best in the U.S. The intense, record-breaking heat sent fish to deeper waters and it wasn't until the last of five days of trying that we hit the jackpot. The past decade of unusually wet weather has filled lakes, sloughs and pot holes; run-off over dam spillways has sent grown and fingerling fish into creeks and low lying areas where the water depth prevents winter kill. One such slough, now about three miles wide and at least 25 feet deep, was a likely candidate for northern pike, one of most voracious fish in northern waters. Unlike walleye pike, these fish are boney - many shun them when walleyes are biting. Using a small foldable skiff, my son, brother and I motored out to an island where the rocky shore and submerged trees usually attract fish. To say the fishing was outstanding is an understatement. The first two casts produced two weighing four pounds each and within an hour we had 12 in the 4-5 pound range. As is customary in North Dakota, a strong wind blew in without warning and we were forced to head for shore, trailing over 50 pounds of pike on a chain stringer. Unfortunately, the pounding waves snapped the chain and all was lost. Disappointed, but not forlorn, we went home empty-handed, vowing to try again - next time with an unbreakable stringer. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

The latest information on the 2007 reunion is included is this newsletter. Now that you can register, take time to make reservations for this important event. We may not have many such opportunities for reuniting and this promises to be a memorable event. Rest assured that Dick and Val will do whatever it takes to ensure a successful reunion.

DALE’S Domain (DALE SHIPLEY)

As Jack said, I requested an update on what’s happening in your domain. You’ve seen that Jack and Bernice traveled a long way—I’ll bet they can tell you about gas prices. Not to defend the big oil companies but I pumped a lot of gas at 23.9 cents per gallon in my father’s station just before I started with the USAF in May 1952. Today gas prices have increased to just under $3.00 per gallon in Colorado or about 15 fold. Compare that to bread that was 10 cents per loaf and now is often more than a buck fifty per loaf. About the same—eh?

Our Secretary/Treasurer, Phil Meek,
reported that he and Beth were fortunate to have a family reunion at the Grand Canyon in early August with 32 members present from around the U.S. They are in final negotiatons for the sale of their motor home and they continue to enjoy reasonably good health.

On August 15th Dave Ogilvie reported that his sister's husband just had heart surgery a couple of weeks ago at Stanford Hospital. The sister and her husband live in Eureka so Dave and Cathy had been away from home for the first couple of weeks in August. He, the brother-in-law, is doing great. BTW, he's a retired GI too.

Cathy and Dave were about ready to embark on a three week trip up and down the Left coast to visit their son in Portland, attend Dave’s 58th high school reunion and visit several relatives.

A few of you may have heard about my wife Elaine and her bout with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. She started chemotherapy late last year and after six months, with many trips to the hospital, she was declared cancer free in April of this year. We are very fortunate that all has gone well. The plan is to continue with follow up observations and preventive treatments every six months for the next two years.

And for what it’s worth. Here’s an extract from an email that I received from our underclass.

Google has implemented a feature where you can type a telephone number into the search bar and hit enter, and you will be given the person's name and address. If you then hit MapQuest, you will get a map to the person's house. If a child gives out his/her phone number, someone can look it up to find out where he/she lives. Everyone should be aware of this! The safety issues are obvious. In order to test whether your phone number is mapped, go to: http://www.google.com/ Type your phone number in the search bar (i.e., 555-555-1212) and hit enter. If you want to B L O C K Google from divulging your private information, simply click on your telephone number and then click on the Removal Form. Removal takes 48-hours. Check your own number. Although this may not apply to you if you have an unlisted number or cell phone as primary contact, you may know someone who needs to know this.

Listing Updates:

Changes are highlighted with yellow on the listing. You may use this to update your current contact lists.

We have lost contact with nine classmates. If anyone has recent contact data on the following please send it to Dale Shipley.

William K Blake, William C Byrd, Wells C Carswell, James E Cone, Boyd L Dailey, Anthony Fuentes, Clarence C Myers Jr., John A Walters, or Theodore R Walters

Note: Dick Nagel received this from an acquaintance:

Theodore R Walters worked at the Santa Monica Airport in Noise Management. He retired from there in March, 2006. I believe he is living in the Carlsbad, CA area where he has family.

I was able to confirm that there is a Theodore R Walters in the San Diego area and that he previously lived in Carlsbad but I could not find a phone number or address. Perhaps this will help someone locate Ted.
