TO ALL 57C CLASSMATES
Bernice and I wish you a Merry Christmas and the best New Year ever. The year 2007 came in quietly for us but is closing with some surprises, with two new great grandsons - the last (7th) due in a matter of weeks. There is much joy for all during our holiday get-togethers when most of our family joins us for a day of feasting and reminiscing. We had a large crowd for Easter and Thanksgiving and expect the same at Christmas.
We faced some serious health problems the past few months but
nothing more or less than most in our age group struggle with on a daily basis. However, the future is looking brighter at this writing, and we expect to resume traveling in 2008. Hopefully, we will reunite somewhere in spring 2009. This is a subject to be explored seriously beginning next month because of the necessity to reserve a site and date at least a year in advance.
Last summer I requested members submit preferences for the site of our next reunion, to be held regardless of the number interested. There was little response - only a handful replied. But In my view it takes only two for a gathering to be classified a reunion and thus some of us will be together again in 2009 or sooner. We all knew from the outset in 2000 that there will be a steady decline in reunion attendance until only one is left standing - a simple fact of life that we all must face without despair. Here's hoping we see more of our classmates in 2009.
Best Wishes,
Jack and Bernice
DALE'S Domain (DALE SHIPLEY)
I want to thank everyone that sent holiday greeting to their classmates. You'll find those greetings later in this issue. Along with Jack, Bernice, Phil and Beth, Elaine and I wish the best of everything for all of you. We have had a reasonably quiet year. Elaine's cancer remains in full remission and she is feeling real healthy again.
We traveled a bit this year, some visits with relatives, but the high point was our trip to San Antonio, Texas for the 50th reunion. We hope
to attend many more and as Jack suggested above we need to get serious about the next one-will it be Vegas or some place else??
Regardless of what you may have seen or heard on the national news, Fort Collins does still celebrate Christmas. The news media, as usual, had only part of the story and that part was wrong. Fort Collins does have colored decorations all over town and the argument was about whether to have or not have only secular displays on public buildings.
Merry Christmas and a Happy, Happy New Year,Dale and Bernice

Meek family activities have been relative routine since the last newsletter. We spent Thanksgiving with family, had a family reunion on December 1st in Tucson and stay active in church. We can't seem to avoid our dentist. We wish you and yours a blessed Christmas and a joyous New Year..Phil and Beth
Now for the Holiday Greetings:
From Frank Walls this note that was just a tad late for the last newsletter:
I've had surgery on my right hand, pinned thumb and cast until
20 Sept. Being right handed I'm typing this with my left index
finger.
In Friendship
Frank
From Karin Goudy:
I know it is not politically correct these days, but I still want to wish everyone a Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukah and a Happy New Year. The Goudy's have had an uneventful year, except for our 50th wedding anniversary trip. Both of our children and their spouses and Dennis and I spent ten days in Hawaii and had a lovely time cruising around the islands. Neither Dennis nor I had been there before. We found it lush and beautiful after living in our drought ridden desert. Our children took care of most of the arrangements and then gave us a wonderful treasure. It is a 16x20 framed collage of blended photos of our entire life, from pictures of our parents, our childhood, our marriage in San Antonio, our children and on up to the present time. There is nothing they could have given us that could have meant more.
Aside from a mild heart problem (Karin) and an iffy back (Dennis) we are both in pretty good health. Karin is still quilting big time and Dennis is still riding his bicycle.
Hope each and every one of you has a healthy and happy 2008.
Karin Goudy
From Ron Janssen:
Dear 57C Classmates,
A new year will soon here and the weather has been kind to us in Illinois during this fall season.
I am still fully retired and doing volunteer work including teaching SeniorNet computer classes. Betsy is still enjoying her five golf and two bowling leagues.
In July the family flew to Disney World for one week of sun, swimming and fun. Everyone had a good time, especially the grandchildren.
May your homes be filled with happiness this Christmas and throughout the New Year.
Ron and Betsy Janssen
From Dennis Goudy:
Karin and I celebrated our 50th anniversary in Hawaii. It was either
that or there wouldn't be a 51st, so I consented. We cruised around
the islands with our kids and their spouses for a week. We had a
great anniversary dinner on the ship on September 21st, and the kids
gave us a large framed montage of pictures from our lives together.
We stayed at the Hale Koa Hotel before and after the cruise. It is a
first-class military resort on the beach at Waikiki--highly
recommended, and very reasonable.
Best wishes to all,
Dennis
From Bill Weimer:
Our year has been busy with two major trips. First, we bought a Motor Home just prior to our trip to San Antonio for the reunion. After the reunion we traveled to Niceville, Florida to visit the oldest son but he was in Croatia on business. We then traveled to Gainsville and visited Judy's sister and our oldest daughter who had been to a conference in Orlando and stopped on her way back. From there we visited a daughter in Rockledge Florida and a son in Jacksonville. When we got home we began preparing for a trip to Alaska.
We began our trip to Alaska in mid-July with stop-offs at Mt Rushmore and my brother's home in Glasgow, Mt. From there we traveled to the Canadian border and then on to Calgary, Edmonton, Dawson Creek, Whitehorse and finally Alaska. We visited with friends in Tok Junction and Anchorage. It was interesting to see changes since I was stationed there in the late sixties. People are truly moving to Alaska in droves. We went south and visited Ben Larsen and his family in Homer. It was a very pleasant visit and it's easy to see why he likes it there.
From Homer we headed north and were blessed with great weather and a beautiful view of Mt. McKinley. We visited Fairbanks and the Arctic Circle before heading back to Tennessee. Our arrival here in Sep was just in time to get things ready for the winter. We were fortunate that the trips were made without breakdowns, accidents or health issues. The Alcan Highway in Canada is extremely rough in the Yukon and we were forced to travel for miles at under 35 MPH and gas averaged $4.50 to $5.00 per gal. We are now preparing for the Holidays and we extend our greetings and best wishes to our OCS families. May they have a Healthy and Happy Thanksgiving, Merry and Joyous Christmas and a great New Year.
May God Bless All,
Bill and Judy Weimer
From Jim Hovingh:
Merry Christmas to all,
Jeralyn and I have been doing a lot of traveling, not only between popular vacation spots around the country but also between various doctors, hospitals, knee therapy clinics, and friends and relatives. We are so thankful for a supportive VA hospital and the M/C-TCFL benefits to enjoy second opinions from any professionals we wish.
I would like to say a SPECIAL MERRY CHRISTMAS to all my OCS friends. I do pray each one of you remember the true meaning of Christmas and the One whose birthday we celebrate.
Godspeed,
Jim and Jeralyn
A special thanks to you officers and key personnel, who faithfully write newsletters, consolidate data, plan reunions, and just help keep us all together. THANK YOU!
From Dick and Val Edwards:
Christmas Greeting from the Edwards
We hope all who took part in the OCS 50th Anniversary had a wonderful renewal of old friendships.
We wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and may the New Year be everything you wish/hope for.
We had a quiet year, considering other years!!! Valerie went on a Cruise to the Caribbean the first of the year with a group of residents from the Air Force Village. Roomed with a female!! resident. Dick didn't want to go. Went to the Beach in July (Dick always stays home - he doesn't like the smell of the water!!)
August/Sept. we drove to Florida to visit Dick's Brother, Bob. Had really nice quality time with him. Usually we stop - visit a day or two and then head out again.
Thanksgiving found our Son, Rick and daughter-in-law, Nancy joining Dick and Val.
We will miss our daughter, Jo Marie and family, from El Paso as they are unable to join us. As the Grandkids get older it gets harder to get everyone together. I would imagine that pertains to all of us!!
Again, the Blessings of Christmas be with you.
Love,
Val and Dick Edwards
From Ken Baisden:
After serving 32 years in the pastoral ministry of the Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod, we (Sylvia and myself) have just "retired" and are making our home in Kingsland, Texas (located about 90 miles North of San Antonio.) We pray that all our classmates with their families have a blessed Christmas as together we focus on the birth of Jesus whom the Bible says came to "save His people from their sins." (Matthew 1:21) May the Lord bless us richly at this time of the Year even as we contemplate the beginning of yet another Year under His reign (2008 anno Domini)?
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
Ken and Sylvia Baisden
From Lowell Cooke:
I had a bout with bladder cancer this past year but after chemo
treatment it seems to be in remission. There were only a few little tumors that were present .I think the Dr's got to it early enough and with a lot of chemicals got it under control quickly.
Other than that Nina and I are in fine fettle for being beyond 75.
I am still working full time; someday I will retire again. I don't know
what I would do if I didn't work besides I like what I am doing. I
have a wonderful wife, a great job, play all the golf I want--life is
good. I haven't forgotten being a rather poor Staff Sgt in 1957 though
and I imagine all of us can say that or something similar.
Wishing everybody a Merry Christmas and a great 2008,
Lowell and Nina
From Clarence Smith:
We just returned from a visit to one of our children. Our email address did change to jdsmith52@cox.net a few months ago. I appreciate your attempts to keep in touch with those of the class that are still around. I have not actively been involved in the reunions. Seems that we have our share of activity and have not made time to participate. The news letters are good. Have a great holiday season of cheer and good health in the New Year.
Clarence and Joan
From Leonard Smith:
Nothing much new here. Lots of racing, symphony and chamber music concerts and plays.
I hope you all have a super holiday season and an even better New Year.
