Below is a document provided by johnnychrome webdesign (thanks Johnny) which gives you an idea of what you need to know in order to get a webpage built professionally, any company that does this will have a similar bunch of questions, if you're applying for funding for your project, a statement including this sort of info will be one thing the provider will want to see.

Otherwise you can just go the free way, or learn about web building yourself through some of the other sites I've listed on my page (see "Leo's Page" link below) It can be lots of fun!

This document sets out to identify the initial requirements you may have for a website.

CONTEXT

• Vision
What is the vision or mission statement of your company or organization?

• Background • Situation

Do you already have an existing website? What situation has lead your company or organization to develop a new website or redevelop your existing one?

• Business objectives

What are your business objectives of your company or organization and how will a website help achieve them?

• Performance measures

How will the gains or achievements of a website be measured and evaluated? E.g. increased orders and sales, site hits over a specific period of time, increased brand awareness,
reduced phone calls to customer service staff, others?

• Target audience (~)
Who are the primary and secondary audiences your website is aiming to reach? What will make them want to visit the site?

• Communication objectives
What are the key messages you want to communicate about your organization, company or product?


• Audience response
What do you want your audiences to think, feel and do as a result of seeing and using your website2

• Interaction and communication exchange

In what ways do you want your audiences to interact with your organization, company or product through the Website? E.G:
· read information on screen
· print out information
· email questions or information requests
· access answers to FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)
· search and retrieve information
· complete and return online forms for membership and events registration
· select, book or order services and products online
· purchase services or products online
· access customer or account information play interactive games
· present an online product demo or download documents and brochures
· link through to websites of allied organizations
· browse a company image library or product catalogue(s)

BRANDING

• Brand vision
How does your brand express the vision and values of your company, organization or product?

• Core values
How would you describe the core values of your brand and its position in the market place?

• Brand partner
Do you currently, or have you recently worked with a brand partner or agency?

• Marketing strategies
What promotional or marketing strategies have been, or are about to be implemented, and how will a website complement these?

• Logo and other graphics
Do you have an existing logo, visual imagery or style guide which are applied to other marketing or promotional materials?

• Development of new graphics
To what extent will you require the development of new, fresh graphics or visual imagery to represent your organisation, company or product online? Do you have an ‘image library’, which could be accessed for this project?

CONTENT

• Information categories

Starting from the Home Page, what information categories will the site be broken into? It would be helpful if you can provide us with a ‘Content Schedule’ which provides a break down of the following:

- Names of main categories and their associated subcategories
- An indication of number of pages in each subcategory
- An indication of which pages will need to be updated most frequently
- Pages that are likely to display most images related to content
- Categories which include any special features or technical functions
- e.g. online calculators, registration forms etc,

• Categories aligned to audience

Which categories, if any, are to be developed with a specific audience, or audiences, in mind?

• Content development

What percentage of new content for the site needs to be developed from scratch? What percentage already exists? What percentage is existing but needs rewriting?

• Writing requirements

Do you have in-house resources for preparing content, or do you require the services of a specialist web designer?

• Style and tone
How would you describe the tone of written content to appear on the site? E.g. formal, informal, authoritative, amusing, other?

• Language
Are there any other languages besides English to be featured on the site?

• Graphs and tables

To what extent will information be represented in graphs and tables? Will any of these need to be animated?

• Video and audio
Will video or audio be featured on the site?



LOOK AND FEEL

• Key visual elements to convey messages
Are there any specific visual elements e.g. branded images, diagrams etc that you feel will effectively communicate your key messages?

• Graphic style
Do you have a preference for a particular style of graphic execution? If yes, it would be helpful to provide an example.

• Colour
Is there a preferred colour combination or existing colour range that should be used? If yes, can you supply a brand or style guide document, which defines these colours?

• Animation
Is there a requirement for animated graphics or text on the site?

• Other website examples
If known, please list the URL’s of other sites from within your industry or profession which you think are good, and not so good. Give reasons why.


BUDGET

• Budget allocation
Are you able to provide an indicative budget for this project? Would you like to complete the project in two or more stages?

TIME-FRAME

• Go-live date
When are you aiming to launch the site?


• Critical dependencies
Is the go-live date linked to other marketing or promotional activities such as television commercials, press release, and new product launch? Are there brochures, television commercials, and public awareness campaigns or newspapers ads due for release that will reference the website address?


TECHNICAL

• Domain name
Have you already registered a domain name for your site? If so, what is the URL?

• Hosting
Where will the website be hosted?

• Server, database and software requirements
What type of server and operating system will the site be hosted on?

• Special technical requirements
Are there specific technical requirements or restrictions that the developer should be aware of at this point? e.g. inclusion of ‘print only’ pages, transfer of graphics from PageMaker

• Browser
Is the site to be accessible by users of early as well as later version browsers or just later versions such as Microsoft Internet Explorer?

• Security
Are there any security issues we should be aware of’? For example, should any components of the site be password protected for access by specific people.

• Relationships with existing suppliers
Do you already have a relationship with an existing information technology supplier?
