History of Canal: Key Points:
- Opened in 1812, but closed for years until 1970
- One of the most beautiful in Britain; only 36 miles, 18 hrs. cruising (6 locks)
- Mostly through Brecon Beacons Park, along River Usk
The Waterfolk Canal Centre in a fine old warehouse at Llanfrynach has some interesting exhibits in its canal museum and runs horseboat trips. In many places it is possible to see where feeder narrow gauge tramways once brought coal, limestone and iron-ore down to canal wharves for loading onto the barges and disused lime kilns are visible along the canal.
Brecon
Brecon is an historic market town with a cathedral, museums and quaint shopping centre. August is a good time to visit, when the annual Jazz Festival and County Show are held. There is a new indoor leisure centre, new theatre and a market of Tuesdays and Fridays.
Abergavenny
This is the 'Gateway to the Brecon Beacons', a market town with eleventh century castle remains, good shops, museum of childhood and is one mile from the canal
Llangorse Lake
The largest natural lake in south Wales, just over three miles from the canal, north of Talybont. Activities in this area include sailing, windsurfing, fishing (pike, roach, perch), canoeing, trekking and picnicking.
