UMASS-Lowell 4 vs. Northeastern 1
October 24, 1999
The Huskies suffered their first loss of the season at the Paul Tsongas Arena, home venue of the University of Massachusetts-Lowell Riverhawks. Lowell scored early and often, opening the game with a tally at 1:08 of the first period. Jeremy Kyte took the puck deep into the NU end, but NU defensemen did not step up to take him off the puck. Kyte, on an assist from Ron Hainsey and Kyle Kidney, was allowed to walk right up to Mike Gilhooly and score. At 15:33 of the first period Lowell would score again when Craig Brown wrapped around the NU net and beat Gilhooly. Again, NU defense broke down and allowed a Riverhawk attacker to get too close to the net.
John Campbell would put Lowell up 3-0 at 3:56 of the second period on a breakaway 1-on-1 against Gilhooly. Later, at 7:39 of the second period, Chris Bell would score Lowell's final goal. Chris Lynch would put NU up on the scoreboard at 10:40 of the second period. The Huskies picked up their intensity after Lynch's goal, and they even carried the play for several minutes until a double minor penalty by Kevin Welch took the wind out of their sails.
Lowell would sit on the lead in the third period. While NU outshot Lowell 8-4 in the final frame, the Huskies were never able to get much of an attack going. The larger Lowell players were successful in blocking NU passes all night long, and the Riverhawks outmuscled the Huskies throughout the game. NU scored only one dramatic knockdown of a Lowell player while Lowell knocked Huskies to the ice all evening and outshot them 24-21.
NU is now 2-1-0 overall and 1-1-0 in Hockey East.
UMASS-Lowell is now 1-3-0 overall and 1-0-0 in Hockey East.
The attendance was a poor 1, 384 in the beautiful, brand new, taxpayer funded Paul Tsongas Arena. Several members of Northeastern's Doghouse were in attendance cheering the Huskies on throughout the game.
The Huskies travel to the University of Wisconsin in Madison, WN for a two game set against the Badgers onFriday and Saturday nights.

Northeastern 4 vs. UMASS-Amherst 1
October 22, 1999
Northeastern is off to a 2-0 start. Friday night the Huskies won their first Hockey East game of the season by topping the Minutemen 4-1 at Matthews Arena before a crowd of 1503 (come on people, the building holds nearly 6000 seats).
NU got on the scoreboard at 5:54 of the first period when sophomore defenseman Jim Fahey scored with one second left on a 2-man powerplay. At 6:55 of the second, Todd Barclay tipped in a goal for the eventual game winner. Jeff Blanchard got UMASS on the scoreboard at 8:18 of the second period when he cut from left to right and put in an assist from Samuli Jalkenen. NU sophomore Leon hayward would add an exciting insurance goal at 9:09 of the second period. Hayward poke checked the puck away from a UMASS player at mid-ice and took the puck one-on-one against the UMASS goalie; 5-hole goal. At 18:24 of the second period, Willie Levesque scored an unassisted goal, and Northeastern held on for the rest of the game as there was no scoring in the third period. Both teams took 33 shots on net.
Northeastern's penalty teams played very well, scoring two power play goals, one with a two-man advantage, and a shorthanded goal.
The Huskies' next opponent is UMASS-Lowell, Sunday night at the Tsongas Arena in Lowell. Following that, the Huskies play two games at the University of Wisconsin. They come back home on Friday, November 5, 1999, at 7:00pm against the University of Maine.
Now a word about attendance. NU has over 160,000 living alumni. There are over 12,000 students enrolled in the university. There are nearly 6,000 seats available in the arena. But in the two games held at Matthews so far this year, there has been a combined attendance of 4,278 people. This is a sorry figure that must improve. Where is the passion? Where is the spirit? When Matthews Arena is full, and the crowd is into the game, there is not another venue in Hockey East that can match the atmosphere. Fans are closer to the action on the ice than anywhere else, and the building echoes sound from the balcony well - just ask the kids in the doghouse. So please, get off you butts and get to a game. If you are at the games regularly, good for you, but bring a friend also.
Let's Go Huskies!
