MOONABOOLA SEA SCOUTS HISTORY {by KEN ASHFIELD 2004}
Scouting is believed to have started in Maryborough in 1909 with the 1st Maryborough Troop registered in 1912.The oldest Group still in existing is Maryborough West {formally 2nd Maryborough} starting in 1925.During World WarII they had 2 Patrols,a Sea Scout Patrol and an ordinary Scout Patrol.
In 1945 they split.The Sea Scout Patrol becoming 1st Maryborough Sea Scouts.They were led by 'Skip' Bert Robbins, a Naval Officer from the war.He was my Grandfathers cousin.He was the Group Leader from 1945 until he died in the 1970's.The early troop had a large whaleboat {ex ships boat} which did many voyages up and down the Mary River.They met initaially at the local wholesale fruit and vegetable market.Before obtaining a lease on the riverbank and moving an ex-Airforce building on site as their 1st den.
