An aerial view of the rapid
After that first cold shower, we started looking at it, from every possible angle, estimating possible lines and guessing obstacles under the foam piles. With this approach, the rapid suddenly started to seem runable, even logical. We even started discussing multiple lines through it. The infamous VI was not a VI today. We realized that a unanimous decision has been made, we were going to run this scary rapid!
Pavlos would run it first, taking the straight line to the right, droping a split level 1.5m+5m waterfall. Dimitris and I, would run the slightly more difficult line to the left, down a three step turning staircase, ending in the same pool with the right line.
Throw bags and camera positions were taken. A good thing beiing inside the boat, is that nobody can see your feet trumbling, or wetting your pants. Thankfully there was noone but Dimitris and myself, waiting in this gorge, so nobody can tell whether my feet were trumbling, but I can swear, I smelt something beside me...
Pavlos appeared behind the rocky bend, aimed his line and drop the fall perfectly, to resurface from the pool 6.5m below.
He was still screaming in joy, when Dimitris said provocative into the camera, that Nikos would run it next. The bad thing about camera is that you can only smile at such a live comment. (I knew I 'd had to buy that video editing program soon)
* Diamond Cutter, as some more rapid names, are taken from the report at Greco guidebook.
