JOAN'S GARDEN
(click GALLERY to see Joan's flower garden)

Joan loves to work in her garden. She uses the garden to display some of her glass art. In the picture gallery you will see mosaic stepping stones, stained glass garden stakes, a copper bird feeder, a glass gazing ball surrounded with copper ivy, and mosaic tables. These were all hand crafted by Joan.

History:
Nickell’s Glass Art Studio grew out of a hobby started in 1986 by Joan Nickell Bailey. She and her husband, Terry, were remodeling their kitchen. Joan wanted leaded glass doors on a portion of the cabinets so she decided to take classes and make them herself. Those classes led to friends wanting to learn the craft, which led to the teaching/retail studio being started in 1989.

Classes and Supplies:
Nickell’s Glass Art Studio offers free classes in the stained glass craft along with an abundance of supplies/glass needed to craft windows, doors, mosaics, and decorative glass objects.

Projects:
1. Joan’s profession was a teacher. She retired in August of 2004. She taught a total of 33 years. The last 26 years she taught at Whitthorne Middle School. For 19 years she taught 7th grade math and for the last 7 years she taught in an innovative program for students who were at-risk for dropping out of school. She used her knowledge of business and the glass craft with her students. Each year she taught a unit on "Starting Your Own Business" using her glass business as an example. Her students visited her studio, making a mosaic box.
In 2000-2001, the students made 36 mosaic stepping stones with a glass lion medallion in the middle for the Lions Club’s district meeting. (The Lions Club was a sponsor of the program in which Joan taught). The stones were used as table centerpieces and then were given away as door prizes.
In 2001-2002, Joan’s students took 2 large, old tables and sanded, primed, and painted them purple. Then they used purple and gold glass (the school’s colors) to mosaic a WMS Tiger on one table and the letters WMS on the other table. The tops of the tables were protected with quarter inch plate glass and were used when the class treated guest speakers to breakfast.
In 2002-2003, Joan’s students constructed a smaller mosaic WMS Tiger table and donated it to the school’s office.

2. Joan and Terry’s church, Bigbyville United Methodist Church, wanted stained glass windows installed in their church. Joan taught interested congregation members the basics of the glass craft. Over a 1 ½ year period, meeting each Thursday night at Joan’s studio, they built 8 windows. Each window is made of 4 smaller panels that, when put together, make one 3’ x 12’ window. Each window depicts a different scene in the life of Christ. The building of the windows was featured on Tennessee Crossroads, a PBS tv probram out of Nashville, TN.
