Oldham County National Honor Society


The National Honor Society is an organization that promotes scholarship, leadership, character and service. Members organize a variety of activities during the year that benefit students, teachers, and citizens of Oldham County and the surrounding areas. National Honor Society members take pride in helping others as well as in excelling individually.

The application process

Qualifications for membership:

1. Students must have attended Oldham County High School for
at least one semester as in accordance with national by-laws. They must also be a junior or senior.

2. Students must have an unrounded cumulative GPA
of 3.5.

3. The five person committee is looking for positive response on the Faculty Evaluation Forms for their character,responsibility and classroom leadership.

4. Students must show evidence of school wide leadership and
service both to community and school on their Student
Activity Information Form.

5. Students must be voted into membership by a majority of the
5 member Faculty Council.

The Process:
1. During the first semester, the advisor checks with guidance and determintes what juniors and seniors who have attended the school for at least one semester have the prerequisite GPA.
2. The advisor notifies students in writing and/or by school announcements of a mandatory meeting to learn more about the selection process.
3. A mandatory meeting is held where the selection process is explained and the candidate is given a packet of information explaining the selection process and the responsibilities of membership if they are inducted. All forms to be completed and their due dates are distributed at this meeting.
4. Candidates must complete The Acknowledgement Form, application and submit recommendation forms to 4 chosen teachers by the required date. This form states that they and their parents understand that the process is rigorous and subjective and that they agree to abide by the Faculty Council's decision.
5. Candidates that meet all of these deadlines are evaluated by the faculty.
6. All faculty rate each student who they have ever taught, advised or otherwise have had contact with a yes or no as to if the students meet the criteria for NHS membership in the areas of leadership as evidenced in their classroom, responsibility and character as witnessed on a day to day basis. Students and parents may not see their evaluation scores nor completed teacher recommendation forms. They may, however, ask to know their what areas they did not meet the criteria if not accepted.
7. The 5 member Faculty Council meets to evaluate the applications, faculty evaluation forms and recommendations. They determine if enough evidence is presented to warrant membership.
8. The inductee list is not posted. Parents are notified if their child is accepted and are told when and where the induction ceremony will be held.
9. Students who are not selected will receive a letter at school or in the mail stating the decision. They can contact one of the advisors if the are interested in knowing why they were not selected.
10. Prior to the Induction Ceremony a "Tapping Ceremony" will be performed. This is done in the student's class as a surprise. A current member taps the student and announces his/her selection to the class. The student is then invited to the induction ceremony.
11. the induction ceremony is held and a reception follows.
