N S B Notes: Almighty God

"Almighty God" (Hebrew, El Shaddai)

The title “Almighty” is applied to God nearly 60 times in the New Simplified Bible. This title has a very profound meaning. We find an excellent expose of this subject in the Scofield Reference Notes, written by Cyrus Ingerson Scofield, 1917.

Scofield states, “The etymological signification of Almighty God (El Shaddai) is both interesting and touching. God (El) signifies the "Strong One" (Gen_1:1). The qualifying word Shaddai is formed from the Hebrew word "shad," meaning the breast, used in Scripture for a woman's breast; for example (Gen_49:25); (Job_3:12); (Psa_22:9); Song of (Son_1:13); (Son_4:5); Song of (Son_7:3); (Son_7:7); (Son_7:8); (Son_8:1); (Son_8:8); (Son_8:10); (Isa_28:9); (Eze_16:7). Shaddai therefore means primarily "the breasted."

God is "Shaddai," because He is the Nourisher, the Strength-giver, and so, in a secondary sense, the Satisfier, who pours himself into believers. As a fretful, unsatisfied baby is not only strengthened and nourished from the mother's breast, but also is quieted, rested, satisfied, so El Shaddai is that title or description of God which sets Him forth as the Strength-giver and Satisfier of His people.”

Another way to describe the Almighty is the “All-sufficent.” The New Simplified Bible uses the title “Almighty” because it is a word that is more easily understood than the term “All-sufficent.” Almighty means having unlimited power. Someone having unlimited power would by nature be “all-sufficent.” The distinguishing quality of love sets Jehovah God apart from all other beings, thus making Him a Nurisher and a Strength-giver.
