THE DEITY OF JESUS CHRIST

New Simplified Bible Notes:

The debate continues… Is Jesus Christ deity? Or is he not deity? The following Biblical evidence proves that Jesus Christ is the Son of God, spiritually powerful like his Father, and very much qualified to be a deity! But GOD, not Jesus Christ, is the true Deity!

(1) Jesus Christ is a supernatural (spiritual) being. (1 Corinthians 10:4)

(2) He is divine. (Colossians 2:9)

(3) Jesus lives forever. (Revelation 11:15; 22:5)

(4) Jesus is a priest forever. (Hebrews 7:17, 21)

(5) Jesus Christ is the Son of God.* (Mark 13:32) (John 1:34) (1 John 5:12)

(6) He is at the right hand of God. (Acts 7:55) (Hebrews 10:12)

(7) Like his Father, Jesus Christ is the Savior. (2 Samuel 22:2) (Isaiah 43:3) (2 Peter 1:11)

(8) Jesus and his Father are united in thought (purpose) and deed. (John 14:10; 17:21)

(9) Jesus Christ is second in command in the entire universe. (1 Corinthians 15:27)

(10) Jesus has a God. (John 20:17) (Revelation 3:12)

(11) Jesus had the power to forgive sins. (Luke 5:21-24) "And the scribes and the Pharisees began to reason, saying, "Who is this who speaks blasphemies? Who can forgive sins but God alone?" But when Jesus perceived their thoughts, He answered and said to them, "Why are you reasoning in your hearts? Which is easier, to say, 'Your sins are forgiven you,' or to say, 'Rise up and walk'? "But that you may know that the Son of Man has power on earth to forgive sins"; He said to the man who was paralyzed, "I say to you, arise, take up your bed, and go to your house.""

Note that his demonstration that he had the power to forgive sins was a statement that he had the power which belongs to deity alone, with the conclusion being that Jesus is himself granted this power from the deity.

(12) Power to execute Judgment and grant Eternal Life. This power was inherited from his heavenly Father and God.

DEFINITION OF DEITY: The Word-Web Dictionary from Princeton University gives the following definition of deity: “Any supernatural being worshipped as controlling some part of the world or some aspect of life or who is the personification of a force.”

IMMANUEL: Jesus Christ was called Immanuel. (Matthew 1:23) (Isaiah 8:8) This name or title means “God with us.” Because Jesus was called “God with us” some people think that he is God. But having a name that ties you to God does not prove that you are God. Most Hebrew names had profound meanings. It was a common practice among Jews to embody the word “God” or “Jehovah” in names. There are men today who have the name “Immanuel.” Are they considered the incarnation of God? Jesus, the Messiah, was God’s formost representative among mankind. In that sense the Son of God was “God with us.”

God’s faithful people have always desired God to be with them. They wanted Him on their side, backing them up in all that they did. The Holy Scriptures are filled with reassuring words and signs from God that “God is with us.” ( Genesis 28:10-20) (Exodus 3:12) (Joshua 1:5, 9; 5:13-6:2) (Psalms 46:5-7) (Jeremiah 1:19)

*Jesus Christ is called the Son of God more than 70 times in the “New Testament.” The term is used 20 times in the four Gospels alone. The context of the entire “New Testament” proves that Jesus Christ is the Son of God and NOT GOD! The context of John Chapter 1 varifies that Jesus Christ is the Word…the Son of God!

Is Jesus Christ God? NO! But using the definitions in this article Jesus could be considered a deity. That is why some call him “a god.” And he is truly “God-like” in his nature. (Philippians 2:5, 6) The Holy Scriptures clearly identify the position of Jesus Christ in heaven. He is second in command. GOD is first! (Hebrews 10:12, 13) (Colossians 3:1) (1 John 2:1)
